Edit Sidebars, Create Hyperlink Out of Header Image
-
Hi there,
I’m new to CSS, and to blogging altogether, and I have a few questions.
1. How do I edit the titles of the sidebars? I don’t want it to say “Blogroll”, for example, but something like “Links”
2. I want my header image to operate as the title of the blog, and thus should be a link to the first page. Is this possible?
3. You’ll notice at the top, the “Home” tab still has its border – how do I remove it? I also think I accidentally added a space between “Home” and the body… how can I correct this?
4. How do I make the margins of the background of the page narrower?
5. Can I change the font in the “Search” button?
6. General question – what’s the difference between Categories and Tags? Thanks for your help in advance!

1. You can rename the “Blogroll” to “link” from Links –> Link Categories –> Drag Cursor to Blogroll –> Click on Edit –> Rename it and click on Update Category.
2. The header alwasy links to the first page.
3. You cannot remove the menu. How you have edited the menu?
4. It is not possible in wordpress.com due to limitations.
5. No, you cannot change the font of the search button in wordpress.com.
6. Categories are used to categories the contents of your blogs while tags are used as the metatags or keywords.
-
2. The header does NOT always link to the main blog page. In most themes the blog title text links to the main blog page. In very few does the the header link to the main blog page.
3. Since that blog is set to private, I cannot take a look to help with the border on the menu stuff.
4. This might be possible, but again I need to see the blog, and need to know what you mean be “margins of the background.”
5.Again, this might be possible if I can see the blog.
6. This support page explains the differences between cats and tags: http://support.wordpress.com/posts/categories-vs-tags/ .

Sorry, I will remove the privacy settings for now so that you guys can take a look.
The header definitely doesn’t link to the main page like the blog title does — there’s no way to make this happen? I guess it’s not the worst thing…
Is there a way to remove the “Pages” sidebar?
You’ll see what I mean about the “Home” tab I think… my guess is that something happened when I deleted the border around the body… Not sure.
Thanks everyone!

There is a way to do an overlay of the header image and have that hyperlink to the main blog page, but I think devblog would be the one to deal with that.
What you are seeing in the sidebar is the default theme-created sample set that is displayed when you have not yet added any widgets to the sidebar. Simply go to appearance > widgets and add the widgets that you do want in the sidebar and the sample display of widgets will disappear.
3. On the menu tab, do you want just to remove the border but leave the tabs? To just get rid of the border and leave the tab, go to ” #navigation ul li a:hover, #navigation ul li a:active, #navigation ul li.current_page_item a ” change border-width to 0 ( border-width: 0; ).
5. To change the font-family in the search button go to ” #navigation ul li.search input#searchsubmit ” add ” font-family: Times New Roman; ” to it (substituting the font you want).
Still need clarification in 4 and the “margins of the background.”

Thank you so much for your help. I’ll try all those things.
By margins I mean the space on the sides between the body of the blog and the end of the browser…. Does that help? The part that is light blue… -
Also, in terms of the menu tab, I do want to remove the border, but if you look closely, you’ll notice that there is a small blue space between the bottom of the tab and the top of the body… I’d like that space not to be there, so that the menu tab is attached to the body…

The blue border area entirely depends on the width of the theme container, the width the person has their browser widow set to, and the resolution of their monitor.
The blog container area can be increased in width, but you have to be careful with that otherwise people with lower resolution monitors will not be able to see your entire blog without horizontal scrolling. MistyLook is set to work with a minimum 800 x 600 resolution monitor (container area just fits in a maximized browser window at 780px wide). While 800 x 600 monitor resolutions are not that common anymore, there are still a number using them, and you also have to keep in mind that the smaller netbooks that have been so popular only have 800px wide monitors.
To move the menu tab down to the top of the container, in #navigation change the margin declaration to the following (note the -5px for the third value rather than the 0 that was there):
margin:20px auto -5px; -
tessc19,
To make your header clickable try and replace your current definitions with this:
#header h1 a { display: block; height: 110px; position: absolute; text-decoration:none; top: 65px; width: 755px; } #header h1 a:hover {border: none;}HTH
