It’s not possible to edit the index.html page on WordPress.com sites, but often we can achieve similar goals in other ways. What information were you hoping to add?

Hi Liz , We want to be in the top3 Google search engine results with the following keywords, we copied some stuff from the number one. Its not enough I guess vi. we haven no =msvalidate.01 but it’s a start.
    HTML content:
    <HEAD><TITLE>MWart de lijstenmakerij in Heemskerk.</TITLE>
<META name=description content=”De beste keuze in lijsten voor bedrijf, particulier en kunstenaar”>
<META name=keywords content=”lijstenmakerij Heemskerk, MWart, Heemskerk, wissellijsten, , schilderijlijsten, passe-partout, witglas, kunstenaar, beelden, schilderij, sculptuur, foto, kunst, beeldentuin, expositie, dans, natuur, expressie, rood, oranje, hout, steen, keramiek, Beverwijk, Zaandam, inlijsten, opplakken, Haarlem, museumglas, Uitgeest, lijstenatelier, lijstenmakerij, atelier, kunsteducatie, drukwerk, ontwerp, baklijsten, kliklijsten “>

So I am curious if there is another possibility to save this in our site, and search engines like Google will find us with the keyword “Lijstenmakerij Heemskerk”
    waiting for your reply…

Thanks for the extra information. While it’s not possible to add meta tags to your site the way you are suggesting, WordPress.com does have many SEO options built in. You can read more about those here.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/search-engines/

It’s also important to note that search engines, especially Google, look to meta tags less and less everyday to determine their search rankings. The more effective way to start ranking for the keywords that are important to your site is to write as much useful and original content as you can about those topics.

If you decide you want to go the meta tag route, you can move to a .org site. Here’s information on how to do that

Why do you guys keep saying that meta description is not important for SEO?

I know it’s not a direct ranking factor. Adding keywords to your meta’s doesn’t help, but writing appealing meta description makes people click your search result. Click through rate IS an important ranking signal.

Did you know that Google does not use the keywords meta tag in web ranking and had not been using it for years?

Did you know also that Bing does not use the keywords meta tag in web ranking either but they do use it to detect spam?

The keywords metatag was a critical element for early search engines but hasn’t been used in search engine ranking since 2002. And, so many have improperly used metadata like the meta description and metatags for so many years now in an attempt yo SEO game the system so they can “own” keywords that metadata has been of decreasing importance since then.

Meta titles, meta descriptions and keyword metatags are not required for SEO purposes, regardless of where you blog. And, here at WordPress.COM we blog on a multiuser blogging platform, so we bloggers cannot access metadata at al and that’s no great loss.

These days search engines pay more attention to your keywords in your content than they do to your keywords in Tags/Categories. The search spiders can detect whether of not the text in a post supports the keywords found in it so keyword stuffing is not successful.

So what it important then? The answer is the keywords in your site title tag and your tagline are of import. Your blog/website URL (web address), the site title, and a brief effective tagline operate as branding tools.

Have you actually read my reply? I know that meta title, – keywords and – description are not a ranking factor.

The point is that custom meta description can get indexed. If site owners can set a well written meta description, this improves click through rates towards the website. It gives people a more clear understanding of what the page is about, which reduces bounce rate. Bounce rate, time on site and click through rate are ranking factors. Setting meta title and meta description indirectly improves SEO.

I honestly do not understand why you guys keep on ignoring this. And don’t start by saying that wordpress.com SEO is great to begin with. I know that is true, but this is a point where site owners can optimize (without using the bad tricks like keyword stuffing, etc.).

I’m not ignoring anything nor am I misunderstanding anything.
