Edited pictures from my desktop will not show on page.

    I’m suddenly unable to ‘add media’. I was trying to insert a photo from my desktop. I’d cropped and resized it to fit. It’s my picture, not one I snagged off the net. When I click upload, it doesn’t show up in the gallery or media library where other pictures I’ve uploaded are stored. And on the page, it shows as a tiny thumbnail with a “broken link’ or torn page symbol. What is going on, how do I fix it and why has it suddenly begun doing this?
    For that matter, this page I’m typing on right now..it mentions pigeons. I see no pictures of anything, much less pigeons.
