Editing an existing WordPress website

  • Unknown's avatar

Our woodworkers user group has a WordPress website setup already. The Administrator, and currently the only Author/Editor/etc. needs help with editing the website. How do we go about enabling others (from a different PC/location) to be able to edit the website? Do the others (2 or 3) need to have WordPress (free or other version) installed on their PC’s in order to be able to edit the webpage as well as the Administrator??? Many thanks for any assistance. Alan

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hi Alan,

What is the URL of the site?

If the site is hosted here on WordPress.com, the site owner can invite other WordPress.com accounts to contribute to the site in various roles as explained here:

If the site is using the open source WordPress software at another hosting provider, the site owner/admin will instead need to create user accounts for the other contributors from within the site dashboard. Each contributor will then receive an email with the username and password they need to log into the site.

In this case the best place to ask for more help with this is the WordPress.org forums – the community there provides support for the open source software; the forum you’re posting in now is specifically for the hosting provider, WordPress.com.

(It’s also possible to add folks via a WordPress.com account – to do that the site owner would need to install a plugin called Jetpack, and then use that to connect the site to their own WordPress.com account. Then they’ll be able to use our user management system I mentioned first. This adds a level of complexity to set up, though, and is not a requirement. I’m just mentioning it so you’re aware of all the options available.)

Do the others (2 or 3) need to have WordPress (free or other version) installed on their PC’s in order to be able to edit the webpage as well as the Administrator

No. WordPress, whether WordPress.com or the self-hosted version, is installed on a server, and designed to be accessed via a browser connected to the internet, or the WordPress mobile apps. You don’t need anything installed on your computer besides your regular browser to contribute to the site.

With the self-hosted version it is possible manipulate the database and files directly on the server via special software installed on your computer, but that’s an advanced feature mostly used by developers, so not something your group really need to worry about.
