Editing an image – advanced settings

  When trying to edit an image, instead of the usual icons allowing me to choose advanced settings, I have 2 boxes, one with X and another which looks like a pencil. The latter allows me to edit the image but not to choose from advanced settings. Any idea why? Thanks,
