editing categories

Argh.
Since implementation of the new dashboard, regarding which I have several frustrations, editing categories has become extremely tedious.
1. If I originally categorize a post ‘events’ and later want to recategorize it ‘events you missed’, it won’t let me. It will allow me to ADD the latter, but not uncheck the first. (Actually it lets me uncheck it, then sneakily checks itself again. Over and over and over again.)
2. If I forget to categorize a new article (which I now frequently do thanks to the new dashboard layout) WP creates and puts the item in a category called ‘1’. Fine. Except that, as in Example #1, I can’t undesignate this. My workaround to date has been to assign a proper category, then go to another page in the dashboard to delete the ‘1’ category. However, this workaround is not effective for Example #1.
In case anyone is listening, I will also say I also really hate that I have to (a) click again to draw up the full list of categories, and (b) scroll through the list rather than view all categories at once. I loved the old format –category list, in full, to the immediate right of the article creation field.
The new dashboard is requiring more time than I have for a volunteer gig and I am having to consider quitting, which is sad so I hope someone can help with the editing category glitch, even if I can’t have my old dashboard back.

Short version: New dashboard does not process my ‘unchecking’ of a category for any given post.

Same with me. New dashboard will not ‘uncheck’ a category. If any one has a clue, pls help.

I am using Firefox. Any relationship to the glitch that prevents me from ‘unchecking’ a given category box?
