Editing comments and notification to commentator
-
It is interesting that you can edit others’ comments on your blog. Now I’m finding that it is useful too.
What I am wondering is whether the commentator is notified if I edit his or her comment? Does this happen automatically and if so, is there a way to turn this off?
Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It’s really not legal to do in many countries. And it’s VERY unpopular with the commenters. If you edit my comment and I find out about it, expect never to receive another one, for instance.
The commenter is not notified, unless they’re subscribed to the comments on that particular post. But if the commenter notices, and asserts copyright (which is his legal right on a WordPress.com blog) you could be in a great deal of trouble.

Thanks, this is very useful!
The context is that most of the comment is great but there is one excerpt that is inappropriate to publish. I guess I could just not publish the entire comment.

You can legally and ethically redact part of a comment as long as you put something like
“blah blah blah comment stuff from the commenter and then [redacted by editor because of language; this is a FAMILY blog] and more comment stuff blah blah”
That makes it clear that you’d just taken it out and why.
Editing comments is a classic internet drama technique, and that’s what I thought you were interested in. Glad to hear it’s not.
