editing DNS for e-mail that is attached to private domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I set the servers correctly to redirect lookingbeyondthesurface.wordpress.com to lookingbeyondthesurface.com, the URL is working correctly. However the e-mail isn’t working correctly in my iPhone account ((email visible only to moderators and staff)). I clicked on edit DNS and saw that the MX was already set to: MX 21 mail.lookingbeyondthesurface.com. I also check with my domain holder for the correct MX setting and their response was:
    A Record | mail.lookingbeyondthesurface.com – 72.18.129.87
    MX Record | mail.lookingbeyondthesurface.com

So what am I missing? I can access the e-mail account via the SmartMail account but not on any other device.
    Please advise,
Cindy – administer of Looking Beyond The Surface

    Hi Cindy,

An MX record needs a number after MX (for example MX 10) – this number sets the priority of mail servers at your domain host. Common numbers are 5, 10, 20, 30, etc. Can you find out from your domain host what the MX server number should be.

Also, I’ve added the A record to your DNS, as instructed by your domain host.

    Thanks,
    Don

    Don,
Thank you for the attention you have given to my questions, however I have more questions.
Your system assigned the MX 27 and in the edit DNS page when I test the command it comes back as good? However I did do as you instructed me to and contacted my domain host for the MX number.

Thank you for setting up the A record to my DNS, the e-mail is now working. Since you set up the A record to my DNS, do I still need the MX number?
    Cindy

    Don,
Here is my domain host’s reply:
Please tell WordPress to set it to whatever they’d like (i.e: priority of 0) – your domain only uses one exchanger, so priority isn’t too critical.

    Hi Cindy,

I’m glad you email is working now. I’ve changed the MX record to:
    MX 0 mail.lookingbeyondthesurface.com.

If it’s all working we can keep the MX and A record. Some domain hosts like both.

Let me know if you have any other problems,
    Don
