Editing offline

I read in the a WordPress “how to” book that I cannot use WORD to edit my blog offline. In checking which apps I can use to work offline I see in your list that WORD pre-2007 is okay. Can I do text and pictures offline. If I can use my WORD how do I upload my WORD document into my blog? I am using Windows 8. Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You are welcome to create content offline using a text editor or MS Word and paste it into WordPress.com.

Windows Live Writer also will connect with WordPress.com, but that software has not been updated in some time (and it doesn’t appear to be in active development now) so some of the features are no longer compatible with the current version of WordPress running on WordPress.com

When I try to cut and paste my Word doc into WordPress Explorer won’t allow it. Any suggestions?

Are you copying regular text from MS Word and pasting it into your Visual Editor in the Dashboard? If so, what happens when you try that – in other words, what do you mean by “Explorer won’t allow it.” Are you getting an error, does it not paste properly, or does the post formatting not look as expected?

I cut and paste in word. I go to the add a post in wp. I try to paste but explorer won’t allow me to paste.

    Hmm, that’s odd.
It would be helpful if you could provide more details on what you’re doing, step by step.

Could you let me know the exact link in your browser to the page on WordPress.com where you are trying to paste in the content from Word? Also, what are you trying to paste – text, or text and images, or something else? Finally, what happens when you try to paste it in – do you get an error or does the content not paste in?

Thanks for the info. Here goes…I go to MS Word. Open new document. Type text and attach a photo. Save. Cut and paste text and photo. Go to WP. Sign on. Go to dashboard. Select post. Select new post. Paste text and photo into area for the post. This last time it printed some of my text but did not include the photo. The message says. “Internet Explorer restricted this webpage from running active content”

So that’s all I know. Hope this helps.

    Thanks…Cathie

It sounds like there could be some settings in your browser that are preventing you from copying and pasting your content.

Could you try doing the same thing without the image, and then use the Add Media button to upload the image to your site, and see if that works?

You can also drag the image file from your hard drive into the window with your post, and that will upload it as well.

You might also try a different browser, such as Chrome, to see if that fixes the issue. If so then it’s likely IE that’s the culprit.

Hmmm. OK but that won’the help me much. I need a way to edit offline and upload everything at once. I am not in a position to be online for long periods of time to add photos online. Is there any software that can work for me? I like wp but it is not working for me.

You can batch upload images very quickly if you have a decent internet connection. It shouldn’t take much longer to upload them this way.

This page explains how to upload images to your WordPress.com blog:

Hi again! Thanks for your help but I am not sure we understand each other very well. I am on a sailboat in the middle of the ocean. I want to be able to write text offiine which looks like I can do The problem is I want to add my photos offline as well so that I can format everything the way I need it to be formatted. If I upload the photos in bulk I will still need to resize them, add captions and intersperse them into my text. This will take much more time than I will have to do this while online. Internet is spotty. It is also very slow. And it is very costly to be online for example they charge $10 for 100 mb of data just to compose my blog. I would like to be able to compose my blog offline…not just a part of it. Is there any software that can do that for me with a windows 8 machine and wordpress. I have been able to do it with the other blogs I have used and I feel sure that there has to be a way I can do this on wordpress. Any suggestions on what type of editor I can use to do this? It’s a bummer that wordpress cannot do this. I hate to start with another blog provider because I like wordpress but looks like I don’t have a choice.

I understand what you’re trying to do, and the reasons why. However, in order to have images on your site, you need to upload the images to our servers in order for them to work. You can’t just copy and paste them and have them appear online. This isn’t a WordPress.com-specific issue, since if you had a self-hosted WordPress site or used a different blogging platform, you would still have to upload images, which will take some time and bandwidth.

I would recommend editing the photos offline and optimizing them to make the file sizes as small as you can tolerate and then uploading them. If your files are under 100kb, then it should not take much bandwidth/cost to upload.

Do you have separate cell coverage from the internet either while aboard the sailboat or when you’re docked? If so, you could upload the images from a mobile device using that data rather than the internet supplied by the boat.
