Editing Pages and Templates

    Hi,

I’m working on a website and have finished the homepage. However, I can’t edit the content on my pages. I have tried two ways:

    1. When editing the homepage, I go to “pages” in the sidebar. But here it only lets me edit the template, and editing one page changes them all.
    2. I go to my home, and open the page itself to edit it. But now the template is disappeared, it’s just blank white and anything I edit doesn’t show up on the page.

This is very annoying for me. Can someone please help?

    Thanks.

These are the two interfaces I’ve tried editing with. The top one only changes the template, the bottom one doesn’t do anything. For some reason anything I put in the bottom editor shows up in the page description (see highlighted text in top image) but nothing on the page. Please advise.

    Hi there!

I’ll be happy to help you with this.

The editors you showed above serve two different purposes. One is for editing the templates — think of them like a layout that applies to many posts or pages — while the other one is for editing individual posts and pages.

The one used to edit the templates is called a Site Editor. We have a detailed guide for using the Site Editor here:

And the other one is called the block editor, or just the WordPress editor. It’s also often referred to as the page editor or post editor, as it’s used to edit individual posts and pages. You can learn more about using this editor here:

    Your current homepage

I looked at your site, and here’s what I found:

Your current homepage has its content coming from the Site Editor. Your active theme has a “Front Page” template that can be edited using the Site Editor. So if you click My Site → Appearance → Editor, you’ll see the homepage on the right, and you can click there to enter the editing mode.

This is what it will look like:

Notice it says “Front Page” at the top, indicating that the template you’re editing is called “Front Page.” Since there’s only one homepage, any content you add/edit here will only affect your homepage.

    Editing your pages

I see that you have a few pages, like this About page, but their content does not appear when you visit the pages. That’s because you were editing the Page template via the Site Editor and removed the necessary blocks to show the page content.

Because you were editing the Page template, which affects all pages, the changes were applied globally.

There’s an easy way to restore the original page template. You can follow these steps:

    1. Click My Site → Appearance → Editor.
    2. From the list on the left, click Templates → Manage all Templates.
    3. Click the three dots next to the “Pages” template → click Clear Customizations. See the screenshot below:

Once you’ve done that, you can view your About page, and you’ll see the content is there. The same will be true for other pages as well.

In conclusion, you can keep these three points in mind:

    • You edit the individual pages by clicking My Site → Pages → click on the page title to edit their individual content.
    • You edit the homepage on this particular theme by clicking My Site → Appearance → Editor → click on the right side to enter the editing mode.
    • You edit the templates (if needed) to change how all posts or pages are displayed from My Site → Appearance → Editor → Templates → click on a Template.

I highly recommend registering for the upcoming free webinar to see this in effect.
