Editing Problem #2 (unintentional yellowing of text backgrounds)

  • Unknown's avatar

Good morning, I wanted to find out if it had been possible to solve the problem of the yellow color in the backgrounds of all the texts that was happening involuntarily.
In my case, I had already written to you guys a few months ago, in October to be exact, and you all had let me know that were looking for a solution.
Today I came back to my blog after a break and I would like to start writing posts again, but with this error continuing I don’t really expect to do so.
I tried to re-edit the affected posts to see if the problem had been solved, but it didn’t work.
In my case, this bug can be seen when the post is viewed from the app or the worpdress reader.
So, I wanted to communicate in case you have a solution, if not, at least I would like some kind of guide to change all this manually somehow.

this is the conversation we had some time ago : https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/editing-problem-yellow-highlighted/

my site just in case: https://abookathoughtblog.wordpress.com/

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

That issue has been resolved. However, if the text is some of your posts or pages is still affected then we’ll need to check those posts. So, can you list the posts or pages where this is happening?

I can pass you some of the posts without problem, there are many so I will only pass some, anyway the problem in my case can only be seen from the app or from the “reader” of WordPress, so quias you see these posts well as you visualize them directly from the web.

Those are some of the posts.
I wouldn’t mind if they can’t be corrected, but it’s more important to me that this doesn’t continue to happen with my future posts. Yesterday I posted just to test, and it still looked yellow from the WordPress app and Reader.
If you need I can pass you some screenshots or something.

Can you give us more information into how you’re creating these posts?

The issue here is that your post text has a lot of CSS <mark> tags, which wouldn’t be set in the post editor unless you manually edit the HTML. Those tags default to a yellow highlight on the reader because there’s no styling set on the Reader – we fixed the styling on individual websites, but that fix wouldn’t apply there.

Looking at your posts as HTML instead of the visual editor, you can see all these <mark> and </mark> tags – any content between those tags would have that yellow highlight – which looking at the HTML, all your content would be highlighted.

[Edit] – Adding screenshot of the HTML editor: https://d.pr/i/44M20I

Are you composing these posts elsewhere and copy/pasting the content into the Block Editor? If so, you’re likely copying in extra HTML (like these <mark> tags) that could cause issues. Again, this visual bug will only happen in the Reader, so you would need to make sure you compose your posts directly in the Block editor to avoid that in the future.

I don’t really know much about editing in HTML, but what I always do in my posts when editing, which I’ve done from the beginning, is to change the font color to black from the “Highlight” option since I like darker black text. But I always edit all texts on the same block editor.

I went to check what you told me about the <mark> tag and I can see that appears when you changed the color of the letters.

Again, I would like to clarify that I haven’t done it manually because I honestly wouldn’t know how, I just mark my texts in the A HIGHLIGHT part in the block editor.

Switching to the classic editor could change this? Or maybe not put any color in the letters at all?

  • Hey there,

but what I always do in my posts when editing, which I’ve done from the beginning, is to change the font color to black from the “Highlight” option

Okay, the Highlight section is adding the “mark” tags for you.

Whether you add highlights with an editor or by hand-writing the HTML, it does more than change the visual style on your site. You’re not just changing the text color (and there are other ways to do that.) You’re telling any sort of reader, from ours at WordPress.com/read to screen readers to search engines, that this text should be highlighted no matter how that site or program chooses to highlight text. Your site just gets to override those styles if people are visiting it directly.

As I mentioned, you can change the text color without highlighting. I noticed you’ve done that for your latest post; would you consider going back and fixing the others?

Several themes, especially the newer ones, will let you set a default text color. Or if you you have a paid plan supports CSS we could help you add a line that would default all text to black. Let us know if you want one of those options, however please note you’ll still need to removing highlighting from existing posts and not use that unless you really do mean to highlight a specific section of text.

    Hoping this helps!

Oh, thank you SO much!!! That was really helpful, I understood what I was doing wrong, I feel so silly lol, thank you very much for the attention.
I have just one more doubt, now that I know I can change the color of the letters where it says “text” on the right bar, I was wondering how I could do if once I set that block to black I can still edit certain words to make them look a different color? If so, how? Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Even if you set the font color for the whole site, you can still change the color of particular words using the Paragraph Block settings:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/paragraph-block/#color-settings.

    Does that answer your question?

  • @sofi022 my colleague is right; if you set black as your default, you’d still be able to override that default as you’d like. You just wouldn’t be stuck changing everything every time you post.

Let us know if you’re interested in that: you could switch to a theme that lets you specify a base text color, or if you use Premium, we can give you the CSS snippet to change all of your content text to black as a default.

I’ve been searching a lot on the subject because I didn’t want to bother you for nothing.

Now I understand that I can change each entire block color from the sidebar option, which is super helpful! I’ll start doing that to keep changing my posts.

On the other hand, I’ve noticed that I don’t have the “text color” option when I want to do it just on one word, but have nothing but the “Highlight” option which I’m not sure whether to use after everything looks yellow honestly. Maybe this is something that will be added again over time or some new update.

Just to clarify, is it normal that I don’t have the option to change a single word within a block? Or maybe there’s another way to do it.

  • Hi @sofi022,

I’ve noticed that I don’t have the “text color” option when I want to do it just on one word, but have nothing but the “Highlight” option

Yes, the inline text color has been replaced by highlight, though they’re essentially the same.

Just to clarify, is it normal that I don’t have the option to change a single word within a block?

It is possible to change individual text color within a paragraph block, as demonstrated here (with the Nuclear theme active): https://d.pr/v/J7Bejf/T4BseZcbi6

    Hope that helps.

Everything has been SO helpful! Thank you all very much for the attention and time, I appreciate it very much, I think that now I’ll be able to manage better when creating my posts and I’ll be editing some old ones too. ☺️

  • You bet! When the whole paragraph is set to black, and you use “highlight” to change text color inline, note that it will highlight in other ways outside your site, so just treat it sparingly. You can also use bold and italics to emphasize as needed: those are pretty ubiquitous. Cheers!
