Editing published posts – finalize changes, get "edit" button off of view screen

I am trying to edit published posts/pages. I call up the edit screen, make my changes, hit update. Then I view the post/page and the “edit” button is still there in full view. How do I update or edit these posts/pages without that being there (i.e., without leaving it wide open for other people to edit)? I’m way too new at this and have to learn at warp speed, so being able to lock the pages (or whatever it’s called) when I finish with my edits, and make sure that only I can get in and make changes, is very important. Please advise using “little words and big letters”.

Log out of your account. Then open your blog. You won’t see ‘edit’ on your posts or pages.

You see ‘edit’ while you are logged in to your account. Your readers, even those with WordPress.com accounts, cannot see ‘edit.’ If I look at your blog, even though I’m logged in, I cannot see any way for me to edit your blog.

It makes it convenient for the logged in blog owner to quickly edit a post or page.
