Editing Side Bar Menus

I would like to know if there is a way to add a dropdown menu to a side bar — specifically a dropdown menu that drops DOWN instead of open to the side. Better yet, a menu that expands and collapses instead of drop down. An example of this would be the windows explorer side bar where the folders are located. You can click on a little arrow to expand the folder, which makes the arrow point down, and then it points back at the folder when you click it again. Do you guys offer any menu widgets with that functionality?

The expand/collapse functionality is basically what I’m looking for in my side bar menus. Are here any widgets that have it? If not, is there any way to add this?

Just for extra clarification, what I’m looking for is actually available in the admin widget page when you use the list view. What I mean by admin widget page is the area in the dashboard under the “Appearance” section. It’s right under the “Customize” page option. When you click that widget page and then toggle list view, you can see exactly what I mean by expandable menus.

I guess it can also be considered a hybrid between menu and some sort of folder widget. I want to be able to organize the pages on my website as if I were filing them in folders, and then be able to expand/collapse those folders so that there isn’t an ever present clutter of pages on my primary side bar.

Please let me know if there is any lack of clarity. I really need this feature and I’m trying to be as explicit as possible without the use of pictures or videos.

P.S.: I also wish we could upload attachments to better describe our problems like I’m able to in the Asana support forums.

And an editing feature as well. It’s a clunky thing to have to post so many replies when you forget to mention something or make a typo.

  • Hi there,

There’s no way to add a collapsible menu like this via a widget, no – the only way to add a menu to your widget area is via the navigation block, and that block is not designed to work like this.

An alternative option is to use a theme that comes with a built-in sidebar menu that works in this way. But none of the themes we currently offer on WordPress.com have a feature like that. There are almost certainly third party themes available on the web that has this feature, but I’m afraid I don’t know of anything specific.

Or else you can use a plugin to add something like this to your site. The Elementor page builder plugin immediately comes to mind as something that might support custom collapsible menus, so you can perhaps have a look at that plugin, and post in their support forums to confirm.

Note that to use either a plugin like Elementor, or a third party theme on WordPress.com will require that you upgrade to our Business Plan, though.

That’s unfortunate. Is there any code I can use to make it happen?

  • Hi there,

There is likely code that will allow a collapsible menu, but it would almost assuredly require at least CSS, which is a feature that can only be utilized with a paid plan as well:

  • @carlosacosta6cfa88d1e8, I just happened across this, and while we don’t have widgets or blocks with that feature right now, I remembered seeing it in an older theme.

So depending on what other features you need, would something like this work?

@supernovia Thank you, honestly, but It’s not quite what I’m looking for. In your example the whole sidebar is expandable/collapsible, as opposed to all the categories in my menu being expandable/collapsible. I may have to purchase a plan with WordPress even though that’s pretty much all I need to access. It’s a bit unfortunate.
