Editing Sidebar widgets no longer edit properly

So what’s going on with the widgets? I tried to edit my personal sidebar entries and links, but there appears to be a bug. and the instructions that display on the page are wrong.

I went into Customize, then Widgets. Then, as the screen instructed, I shift/clicked the entry I wanted to edit, but it didn’t work. The left sidebar refreshed, but the central display remained the same and there was no way to edit. I managed to locate the category I wanted to delete in the left sidebar, but ‘delete’ removed everything, not the selected category.

I want most categories to remain the same, but need to delete one category and an entry in another. What’s going on?

  • Hi, it’s working for me here. Can you confirm what browser you’re using, and what version? You’ll want to be sure you’re using something as current as possible.

Note too, you’re also welcome to navigate to the widget directly via Customize > Widgets, then pick the widget you want to edit.

I’m on a mac running the latest OS, through Firefox. I tried Safari and that’s different but no better. I got to widgets via Customize, did a click-shift on the Category I wanted to edit, and this time, the picture in the center changed…to something unrelated to either widgets of the category.

So the site software recognizes my calling for an edit, but it reacts inappropriately. This is a change from what used to be, because it used to work.

    Any ideas?

  • Double check those browser versions from https://browsehappy.com/ It will tell you if the browser(s) need updated.

It’s also worth clearing the browser cache, and making sure you have javascript enabled in the browser and are allowing third party cookies.

The browser is fine. Everything else aside, two independent browsers giving the same result says the fault Isn’t at my end. The software, is always up to date.

I allow third party cookies, but not trackers. But that doesn’t matter because I tried disabling all protections and the result was the same. I select the category from the left sidebar and the center screen may realign up or down a bit, but that appears to be because all categories but the one selected have vanished from above and below. But. there is no provision to edit the text or the category text.

The left sidebar has a delete button, but if I use it the screen shows no categories. There’s no undo, so the only way to undo is to reload the page.

I’d send screenshots but there seems rto be no provision for that in this window.

And this is under widgets? It’s not clear to me exactly what you’re trying to change.

The only thing you can do with categories under Widgets in the Customizer is to add a categories widget, and you have that already. The categories widget displays all categories on your site that contains a published post. You can change the title of the widget (currently “Selections”), and you can configure some display options for the widget, but that’s it.

The Customizer cannot be used to modify any content on the site, including categories, only to control how that content is displayed.

To edit or delete an existing category on your site, you must instead go to My Site ->Manage ->Settings ->Writing. If you click on Categories at the top there, you’ll see a list of all existing categories on your site, and you can make the changes you want.

If I’m misunderstanding what you’re trying to do, please let me know. If you want to share a screen shot, upload those directly to the media library at My Site ->Site ->Media, and we’ll be able to see it there.

I found the problem. While they look just like categories and are called categories, they’re part of “links,” and need to be edited as links. It’s been a few years since I dealt with them, so I forgot. But…

Any setup, in which you can have categories within the links that look, feel, and share the name of the entity labeled Categories under Customize is dead wrong if you want it easy to use site. And the fact that each link has a “hover-box” that says “click-shift to edit,” one that responds in an inappropriate way, is clearly, a bug that should be addressed by having it call up to the proper link editing section.
