Editing site created by someone else
-
Hi all, I have never used Word Press before and have been asked to help a friend with his website to basically remove an old email address off the site. The person that created the site is no longer contactable.
Can anyone explain a simple way to change an email address & link on a website please? I have just created a word press account but it is asking me to link domains and subscribe to the paid version. The website is hosted on 123-reg and I have full access to that with the ftp username/password for the website. I have downloaded this to look at but found that it was created in word press
Would I be able to find out the word press account that this website was created with in order to reset the password and log in that way? or is there another way to edit the site?
Hope that makes sense
John

Hi there, would you please share the URL of the site you’re referring to?
Once we know that, we should be able to help or at least direct you to the folks who can.

Ah, ok, your site is not hosted with WordPress.com; it is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted with 123-reg.
So, you’ll log in to it through http://martinhowarth.co.uk/wp-login.php and not through us.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/
WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
And if you don’t recall the username or password but have access to the hosting account’s control panel where phpMyAdmin is usually found, I recommend following this guide: https://wordpress.org/support/article/resetting-your-password/#through-phpmyadmin
That will walk you through changing the password and username directly in the database.
With that said, if you’d like to manage your WordPress.org site through WordPress.com, that is one of the features of the Jetpack plugin: https://jetpack.com/support/getting-started-with-jetpack/

Thank you so much. I will try this tomorrow now and see if I can gain access to make the changes.
