  I do apologize for the newbnessocity of this question, but do I understand correctly that the only way to tweak the colors of a theme is to purchase the CSS upgrade?

  Yes, it seems that way… and you should have a basic understanding of css…(or, you would get that from either upgrading, or testing a little on your local machine :-)

  You can also experiment before buying the CSS upgrade, to see whether you can get the effect you want. The Edit CSS option in the Design tab has a preview option.
