Editing themes to include video content

I am interested in creating a size to promote video services. Before I start, if I concentrate on choosing a theme style that I like, can I change image placeholders in themes to be video thumbnails (linked to YouTube)?
I ask because the default themes for video seem to be primarily video gallery (with little room for other content) or a single video place holder. I like some of the themes – but need to be able to add video content preferably in a gallery.
I have seen third party themes for this but not sure how you start up with WordPress by using a third party theme (you seem to have to select a default one to start).

It appears you are interested in editing themes and install third-party ones. Due to security reasons WordPress.com is unable to provide those abilities.
This is the help line for WordPress.com. You should consider making a post in the WordPress.org forums. They will be better able to assist you with solving your problem.

When you make a post be sure to let them know which version you are running (click the “W” in the top) and your theme (click on themes and look for the one that is “active”).
