Editing 'Your subscription has been activated!'

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to offer people a free tips ebook if they ‘Follow Blog by Email.’ Is there a way to do that using the widget? I don’t want to have a whole newsletter, just to encourage people to sign up for the blog.

Could I edit the ‘Your subscription has been activated!’ text? Or is there some way in the form shortcode to do this?

    Thanks! Susan

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yep! You can edit all of the text that the widget shows in the widget settings through the Customizer. Here’s some info about those different text boxes:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/

You could also edit the subscription confirmation email that we send. That’s in your Reading settings:

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks for that information. But I realized that is still not going to work. After they subscribe and confirm, then I would like to either take them to a page where they can download the free ebook or give them a link in the message that says they have now confirmed.

Is there a way to do that?

    Thanks for your help, Susan

Sorry, ” or give them a link in the message that says they have now confirmed.” By that I mean give them a link to click on to take them to the page with the free ebook.

Sure! You can include that link in either location I mentioned. If you add it to the widget, you’ll want to use code like this:

    <a href="YOUR_FULL_URL_HERE">Link text</a>

You can use the same code in the email message, or just leave it as a text link.

Let me know if I can help further!

    Hi Shawn,

Maybe I’m misunderstanding, but if it is in the widget or the email that asks them to confirm, then they can get the free ebook without actually following the blog.

So the link would need to be in the language that says that they have now confirmed.

    Thanks
    Susan

    Hi Susan,

I’ll consolidate all the suggestions that Shawna has made into a to-do list. If any of the instructions don’t make sense, of if we’re missing the point of your goal, please explain the steps which you want to take place when a new visitor follows your site.

Read through each step and make sure we’re meeting your needs:

    1. You can add the Follow Blog Widget to your sidebar. Your visitors can choose to sign up for your blog, and if they’d like, to receive notifications of your new posts.
      https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/
    2. Maybe I’m misunderstanding, but if it is in the widget or the email that asks them to confirm, then they can get the free ebook without actually following the blog.

You will adjust your outgoing message. They will receive this upon subscribing to your blog. They will ONLY receive this email if they’ve agreed to follow you.

    3. So the link would need to be in the language that says that they have now confirmed.

You can adjust your message here, to say anything you want:
      https://gettingoutfromgoingunder.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php
You can include a link that will take them to the page you wish — this page should include a download link for the PDF copy of your eBook.

I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

Ok here is where I think this is not quite what I need.
In my Reading settings, I can change the Blog Follow Email text

What it says now is:You recently signed up to follow this blog’s posts. This means once you confirm below, you will receive each new post by email.

    ***

So they have to click a link to confirm that they really do want to follow the blog.

If I put my link in this email, there are now two links. They could just click on my link and never click the link to confirm that they want to follow.

I want to only make my link available AFTER they have clicked the WP link to confirm that is contained in the outgoing email.

    Thanks,
    Susan

    Hi Susan,

So they have to click a link to confirm that they really do want to follow the blog.

True…Non-WordPress.com users will have to confirm that they want to follow you by email. There isn’t a way around this, unfortunately.

If you’d like, you can cobble together a work-around:

    1. Add a contact form to your sidebar (or anywhere you wish on your site), that asks people for their email address so they can follow your site, and so you can collect their address to send them your e-book.
      http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/
    2. Then, you can manually send them an invitation to follow your site:
      https://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/
You would invite them to be followers on your site.
    3. Once they accept, you will receive notification. Then, you can send them an e-book to the address they entered into your contact form

This is more labor-intensive, but might give you the subscription-confirmation-ebook delivery flow you want.

    Thanks again :)

Thanks so much. I think I will have to use a mailing list service. But yes, you did create a way to do this. Unfortunately, it involves too much manual intervention. But you definitely answered my question. Thank you.
