Editor does not preserve formatting on copy-paste from Word
-
Please advise how to revert to the old text post editor that retained critical formatting, or how to force the new editor to stop stripping said critical formatting.
My current chapter looks like complete garbage, and I’m going to be wasting a lot of time fixing it. Very Not Funny.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no way to revert.
In future, use an offline blog editor like Windows Live Writer. That will preserve your formatting and allow you to tag and categorize, title and add photos to your posts all offline.

Copying the data directly into the edit page as opposed to the creation page seems to work. The formatting appears to be resolved after an edit and copy.
Still, I just sent out something very ugly to all my followers. Really need formatting it to work on create page.

Raincoaster, I’ve put half a million words into WordPress, between my two blogs. Today was the first catastrophic failure of all formatting on a new post, and it’s the same day that I see this new-looking editor.
Are there plans to rollback to the prior post creation system until the new one is properly tested and verified to work? Word has always worked fine for me, and I hope it will continue to do so, the next time I post.

I hope that the problem is fixed soon then, because sending unformatted blogs of 3000+ words which require italics and bolding to clarify speech and narration is bad. Losing paragraph spacing is just as bad.

See here please https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/the-paste-as-word-button-has-been-removed-from-the-visual-editor?replies=6
The paste from WORD button will not be restored. The paste as plain text button eliminates all code. So as raincoaster said using Windows Live Writer is worth a try as the code may be preserved when using to post to your blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/windows-live-writer/ -

Try with an offline editor:

I have never used any “paste as Word” button. I have simply copied from word, and pasted directly into the text box.
I am using an offline editor. Microsoft Word.

On March 24th, Staff introduced new features to WordPress.com and eliminated some old ones from the editor. They removed the “Paste as (Microsoft) Word” button from the Visual Editor toolbar in your post/page editor window. All we have now is the paste as plain text icon that we can use and it removes all formatting. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-textBlog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. For formatting and spacing see > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/09/13/wordpress-formatting-and-spacing/
When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.
Or use Windows Live Writer

This problem started today. Not March 24th.
The only problem I had before today was a strange inclusion of the number “1” indented, at the beginning of some italicized lines. That might have started at around March 24th, I’ve been noticing it for a while.
The visible appearance of the editing tool changed today, the same day that real problems started.
My formatting rarely ever requires more than one blank line, that’s not a problem. However, losing all blank lines between paragraphs is a problem.
Seriously, what was changed in the last few days to cause this, and is it still being looked at to fix it?

To prevent copying an pasting issues enable this please

__WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
save changesThere has been a change to the post editor interface at https://wordpress.com/post/ and Staff are recommending that we bypass the New Dash in favor of posting directly on our sites at Dashboard > Posts > Add New. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/where-did-the-add-media-button-go?replies=2#post-1927520
For image uploading please note the Staff response here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-is-there-now-only-small-pictures-in-the-post-can-i-get-them-big-again?replies=3#post-1927594
There will be further new iterations of the post editor at https://wordpress.com/post/ and that is why the advice is to go to Dashboard > Post > Add New

Sounds like you have had a persistent HTML error for some time. That’s the kind of thing that paste from Word causes, and that’s why they changed the way pasting works.
There is and always has been a difference between the editor when you use the New Post button and the editor when you go to Dashboard->Posts->Add New. The former changed yesterday. The latter retains all the options it had before, so I suggest you use it.
The new changes are not considered “broken” by staff. They are deliberate. They will be unlikely to revert to the old way.

Thanks folks, I have adjusted the writing settings, and will use the dashboard post addition method rather than the new one.
We’ll see what happens in a couple days when it’s time for a new chapter.
