Editor Feedback

Really miss the former ease of editing images, via all the easily accessible options that were available when clicking on the edit (pencil) icon. Seems as if now the only editing that can be done with that icon is to add a caption. Am I correct, or am I neglecting to see/use some other option?
The pencil icon is not there for images, but editing things other than caption is present. You can edit alignment, size, and caption from the image toolbar which appears when you click on an image in the editor. To add other things like title, description, and alt text, you need to do those at the time you insert the image or you can remove and re-insert the image. When you are in the image library screen, click the edit icon that appears when you hover over an image to see the details.
Also, I used to be able to include a link as part of the text in the image caption. Now the url keeps dropping below the caption–floating on its own, within what is the text area. Is it possible to get the url into the caption, as I had done with all the images in the past?
Pleas try highlighting the text in the caption and using the link icon in the edit toolbar to add a link. I just tested that, and it worked in my test.
Also, from within the image editor, I really liked the drop down menu for stipulating which, if any, image url would be visible to readers. How can I stipulate that information now?
Same thing again. Click on the image and then click the link icon in the edit toolbar to add a link.
I read the response to an earlier question about changing the image size. Do I understand that if we prefer a custom size, we no longer enter “numbers,” but now have to drag the image to the desired size?
The -/+ sizes will cycle through the preset sizes: thumbnail, medium, large, and full. You can customize those default sizes for your blog at WP Admin > Settings > Media.
…Finally, I’m not seeing the toolbar options being referred to in some of your responses to other queries. Does the free version have a different toolbar option for either/both text and media?
The toolbars for text and media are the same regardless of your account type.
> THANKS SO MUCH for taking time to answer. …God bless you!
Thanks for blogging at WordPress.com!

Greetings! Please don’t dismiss all the constructive criticism/concerns you have been receiving as a matter of resistance to change…
Perhaps for folks whose needs are different from the needs of those of us who are more than disappointed, the change is welcomed and applauded. Not so for me. There is nothing gained (what has been gained???) in this new edition that I wouldn’t trade in a nanosecond for features I previously depended on that just aren’t available.
Although the missing image editor functions were my top concern when using the new editor last night, I totally agree that new was not improved in terms of word count tracking & text input width area, as well. Please reinstate those features!
As did other WordPress users, I respectfully request that when such a major change is rolled out, users get “warning,” as well as tutorials.
Please bring back the previous–more functional–version. If that is not possible, then please do not remove the option for using the old version in the way you described. Please advise–is that old version option going to be phased out/removed? If so, when? Thanks so much for doing your best; thanks for recognizing that we wish to use WordPress to do our best–something that is no longer possible with the new (unimproved) version.
Peace! Thanks again!

I am also extremely disappointed with this new “improved” editor. It is not user-friendly at all. No threat, but I really cannot use it the way it is now. How do I get back to the “old” one? My eyes do not work with this thin text and narrow space. We are not all young bloggers with fresh sight! In short:
1. The editor is too narrow. If this editor is designed for phones, there should be one designed for laptops, too, and both should be available. I cannot write my whole title (Giant text…) because the end of it disappears out of sight, and is not possible to correct unless I take away ALL text and start again…
2. So, the title in the editor is enormous (how can that be good on a phone?) and the font in the visual editor itself is also huge.
3. Editing pictures? Impossible. And I still have to find out about galleries a.s.o.Finally – It’s like I’m using a tiny mobile app on my laptop. I don’t understand why this would be the optimal solution. And as my blogs are mostly relying on photos – everything concerning them has to be easily done. I really do not want to stop blogging, but WP has changed so much that it doesn’t feel easily managed anymore. Sorry. Please, rethink…
Thank you for trying…but this time it does not work for me. -
Right — “High-Speed” because so many features are missing. I’m sure this half-baked interface works great for quick-and-dirty posts via mobile phone, but really now ….
Why not give users a choice to switch between a the full-feature editor and this thing?

@cbhanek, there are no plans to remove the WP Admin editor, however, the links to it may be phased out in the future and you will need to bookmark it or type in /wp-admin at the end of your home page URL and use the left menu if you want to continue using it at that point.
@lagottocattleya, I will make a note of your feedback, thank you for writing it. To create a gallery, click the Add Media button and then select multiple images before clicking “Continue.”
@lagottocattleya and @notionscapital, you may access the old editor by adding /wp-admin to the end of your home page URL and using the left menu if you prefer that editor. However, I would like to do my best to help you with any questions you have about the new one and I hope you will give it another chance at some point.
-
Thank you for answering so fast! Now I just want to add that I can no longer click on my pictures to enlarge them! Or am I doing something wrong? This is essential to my followers!
-
@lagottocattleya, the links need to be added. You can do that in the new editor by clicking on each image in the editor and then clicking the link icon in the edit toolbar. The link to the original image will be pre-filled. Then click the “Add Link” button.

I liked the old version–I say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
I reuse a lot of my images. I liked being able to find an image in the media library by month. I don’t always remember what I name the images, but it’s easy to choose a month so you don’t have to scroll though so many images.
I also want the word count.
Us old folks hate to re-learn revised technology. -
Adding /wp-admin at the end of the home page URL, while inelegant, is a lot less awkward than trying to use the new editor, which lacks the HTML shortcut tabs of the old editor. The “Shft-Alt + Letter” functions don’t seem to work, and coding a decent-length post by hand is pretty tedious. Oh, and the “add media” function doesn’t seem to accomodate video.
Honestly, it seems like you’re throwing out the baby with the bathwater here.

I know this thread is getting crazy, but I wanted to follow up on the response posted to my previous post here.
Click on the image after it is inserted and has fully uploaded and you should see -/+ icons appear in an image toolbar. Clicking on the -/+ icons will cycle through the preset image sizes: thumbnail, medium, large, and full size.
Custom size is missing as is the image border option and changing the alt text, too, if I’m remembering correctly. I have to go back to the old editor to do a custom size and I have to use html to add a border and I have to go to the media library to change the alt text. That seems like a lot for something that can be done all in the old editor without going anywhere else.
The editor is designed for desktop and for phones—it works with both.
I have heard this answer several times, and I don’t doubt that it functions for both desktop and phones. But functioning and being optimized for are to different things. And this editor is most certainly not optimized for desktop/laptop. The removal of so many features (maybe there, but way more steps) and the wasted space on a laptop screen make it obvious that mobile use was the priority. There’s a mobile app. I don’t understand why the web editor has to be focused on mobile, too. If that’s such a huge priority, there should be 2 editors and users should be able to choose depending on their hardware.
Hold down the Shift key and press Enter to get a single line break instead of double.
Thanks for this – I feel like a doofus because I never knew! I was just going to the html editor and changing it there (glad I know a bit of html!).
Thanks again for the response!

I suggest you make a tutorial asap with all the instructions you have given here regarding “image” , as it seems to be one of the biggest headaches regarding the new editor, and the thread is becoming too big to go searching for all your suggestions to fix something that was working well. Also please add back the spelling and word count features as soon as possible. Thank you

I have to join with those who do not like the new editor. I repeat the others’ complaints about too narrow a typing field, the title field is way too big, and the “featured image” not explained well. I tried including one as a whim, and when I previewed the post I didn’t see it at all and figured it didn’t work. Then I saw the image is actually for when I share the link. That should maybe be called something else like “link image” or or something?
I am not a fancy, fancy blogger. I don’t know much HTML, don’t use tables or lists or word count. But what I do use, which is part of my theme as a blogger, is a link to a youtube video at the end of every one of my blog posts. The ability to just cut and paste a URL seems to be completely gone now. I had to highlight text and make that clickable and put my link there. Before when I clicked “insert media” I could just C&P a URL. It used to show the youtube link and a preview picture of the video I linked to. I spent like 10 minutes looking around for this and couldn’t find what happened to it. PLEASE bring this capability back. If I want to include a list of URLs at the end illustrating my favorite brands and types of telescoping boom cranes for God’s sake, I should be able to just include the list of URLs – preview pictures or not.
I’m mostly glad I came here so I could find that there is a way to access the old editor, which I strongly prefer in just about every capacity. I dislike the shady hiding of it and having to “remember” to add some weird ending onto a url that I type in, but if I must, I must. I will be using that going forward.
I do have one final Q: is one able to start a draft in the new editor, save it and switch to the old?
-
Thanks for the effort. Although it’s visually simpler it seems not compatible with my use of WordPress: Share photographs in a little size from my Flickr account to post and write on WordPress with a link to fullscreen size.
Before the change I could simply use the Flickr links to get a URL to share with the easiness to don’t charge with megabytes in my WordPress account. Now when I use a Flickr link to share actually that little image is being storaged in my WordPress account…
Is there a way to get the old system? the new one is visually simpler but at the same time I need to do more clicks to perform the same actions (use the URL link of the image, centering the image, link the image, they could be done in just one window before)

It looks great, I like the flow and the ease that comes with the upgrade. Auto spellcheck is convenient Plus autosave is a nice touch, especially when I’ve had hiccups where I’ve lost pages of what I was writing due to an accidental page reload.
However, there are some drawbacks:
1. No word count… really?
2. No way to provide borders on pictures when uploading -this editing feature I just found two days ago and loved disappeared…
3. Top bar switching between html and visual doesn’t scroll down with view.
4. WP Admin up and disappeared from shortcut under “my sites”. WHY?
5. And why can’t I edit pics I upload anymore? No size management, no cropping, no linking, nada.I’m only 50% in love with this surprise…
-
(1) Please bring back the toolbar in html mode. Seriously.
(2) Please keep toolbar on top, as page scrolls down.
(3) Please allow us to re-name media after we upload it. (It is a pain to have to edit the html code after inserting media.)
-
@rockandrollmama, yes, you can edit a saved draft in either the classic editor or less-functional “new” editor. You’ll have to go to “Drafts” in the WP-Admin to use the classic editor for editing.
As I mentioned in another comment, I only use the classic editor for both new posts and editing older ones. I also use a user-script so I can click the “Edit” button on the blog post to edit in the classic editor.

@designsimply, thanks for your replies. I appreciate the explanation of autosave & motivation for the “Saving..” feedback. If this could be adjusted so that the “Saving now” feedback was the same size and shape as whatever is present in the absence of that feedback, that would make the well stop jumping around distractingly when it happens.
@kriskaroski
>Could you confirm if you are using Internet Explorer? We’ve found an issue with page up/down not working as expected in IE that we plan to fix.I reported this above, but I’m having the problem using Firefox 40.0.3: page up/down is going to the top & bottom of the editing buffer, and home/end is going to the beginning and end of the line.
Someone said:
>To add other things like title, description, and alt text, you need to do those at the time you insert the image or you can remove and re-insert the image. That’s annoying. I hope the ability to edit these items without re-inserting is another feature that just hasn’t been implemented yet but is coming soon.
General process comment:
It would save users a lot of angst, and would save you folks a lot of typing, if every rollout/feedback post like this one ended with a section something like this:
If it looks like some features you liked have disappeared, check the list below: these items are definitely in the plan, and we’ll prioritize them based on user feedback. If your favorite feature is *not* on this list, definitely mention it here: user feedback about such items will definitely be folded into future project planning.
That would be way easier on the nerves than discovering “waaughh where’s my favorite feature?”, posting about it, and having to wait for a response. :)
Thanks for all the helpful responses on this thread.

Disappointing. It looks cleaner, but is less functional. Thank Gourd I can still use the older editor. If I had my way, I’d go back a few editions to when I could edit full screen! That was so awesome. And the sidebars would stay still. Sure, I’ve used the newer editor lots of times, and I can safely say with experience that each new roll-out is harder to work with. But, I do like to make complex posts with a lot of images, and I do a lot of editing. The new editor is probably better for newer generations who mostly wanna’ use it for something slightly more elaborate than posting a selfie on Instagram.

Just tried to use the old editor, and I can only go back one version, to the former “new improved” editor. Does anyone have a link so I can go back to the one before last?
