Editor Feedback

  • @lizzysilk

It’s annoying that the sidebar doesn’t scroll with you as you scroll down a post and anything you can do to bring back the ability to directly link to your own posts!

I’ve noted your feedback and the good news is both of these are planned to come to the new editor in the future.

How do I go about using the classic editor to edit an existing post? It doesn’t seem to give me that option.

  • @knashermac2009 If you paste the image URL onto its own line in your post in the Editor it will appear automatically without being added to your Media Library

  • Unknown's avatar

@scottmac56 you can get to the classic editor by going through your admin page and when you see posts click on all posts. All of your posts will show up in a list and you can click edit under the post you want to edit.

  • @thedailyblabber By default images in the new Editor are not linked. Could you explain why you think the new Editor makes it easier for someone to steal your images?

We do not have plans to add right-click blocking on WordPress.com as this is generally a frowned upon practice and modern browers bypass the block anyways. The best way to protect your content is adding a watermark and reporting infringement. You can find more information here:

@kriskarkoski When you post a photo, usually the photo is linked. Which means, someone viewing your blog can click the photo, which will then open in another page at full size. This makes it easier to steal for the purpose of printing. I tend to post photos with no linked page so that they can’t be blown up. I couldn’t find this option this morning.

  • @goldfeesh Could you explain what you mean by theme-specific features? We have the rest of the features on our list to look at in the future, but wanted to get some more information on that part to make sure we understand what’s missing.

I would also like to add that images that go to full size when you click them are an absolute must! Bring that back too, please.

  • @ccarter008 After inserting an image select the image, then click the link icon in the toolbar and save the full-size link that autofilled there. We’ll be improving the way this works to make it more automatic in the future for those who prefer it.

Not happy with the new editor!
    1. I miss the toolbar at the top of the HTML editor.
    2. Having to jump through hoops to change picture size in the editor is a huge PITA.
    3. If this editor is designed for phones, there should be one designed for laptops, too, and both should be available.
    4. The category and tag options — the category is default set to “Uncategorized” and when adding categories, I have to manually remove that one. Frustrating.
    5. I also miss the word count.
    6. Spell Check. Essential.

Also – I can’t get to the old editor. Potentially because I changed my theme this month. FFS guys, you need to ask first!

The new editor is not my cup of tea. It looks fancy, but it’s a lot less functional for me.

Having the post box just get longer and longer makes it take much longer to get my posts written and edited. Having a fixed box size, then having a scroll bar appear in the box is less distracting and makes it much easier to find the place I’m trying to edit. The “infinity text box” might work alright if the toolbars (both top and side bar) stay at the top of the screen instead of disappearing. I add all my photos and everything else after the post body is written; and right now I have to put my cursor in the spot I want to edit, then scroll all the way back to the top, then scroll back down to where I’m editing.

The new format for adding tags and labels is kind of frustrating. Adding new tags and categories from the post itself is not as intuitive as the old method. Being able to scroll through all of the available tags would be nice (a feature that wasn’t in the old one either, but would have been nice). I try to use the same tags on related posts, and not being able to look through all of the options can make it difficult, especially if it’s been a while since I’d posted a related post.

My biggest peeve about the new editor, however, is that I can’t link to previous content in the same way! I have to open a separate tab, click on ‘my sites,’ click on ‘blog posts’ or ‘pages,’ wait for them to load as I scroll to find the post(s) I’m looking for, click on ‘view’ when I do find my past post, then copy and paste the URL into the post. It makes it take a minimum of twice as long to link to my past posts. I’m a daily poster, so it can take a long time to scroll through my previous content.

I do really like the new feature image preview, however. That really makes it a lot easier to visualize what my post will look like.

  • @paulainauckland Thanks for the feedback, we have existing plans to address all of these, but I will add your votes to the corresponding ones so we can prioritize them appropriately based on demand

You can access the classic editor directly by adding /wp-admin/post-new.php to the end of your site address

At this point, I think I would like to just have a quick, easy toggle switch allowing the user to pick which version of the editor they prefer. The old editor, the one that was the standard in 2011, is the only one I’ve really liked. The new one is actively hostile to HTML editors, and as I’ve yet to see a WYSIWYG editor that was worth its code, I’m going back to the old dashboard and old editor so I can actually control how things actually look without having to jump through absurd hoops to add images to my media library while writing.

Sorry, but i haven’t the time to read through all this, so maybe its already been asked, but I can’t see how to choose the size of photos, in the old editor i could choose small, medium or large. Also, sometime when editing i see a small save button, other times its disappeared, so how then do i save? I’m afraid i don’t like it thus far, will take some getting used to but would like the option to be able to use the old one

  • @dreamwriter90 Thanks for the details on why these features are important to you! The plan is to eventually have the post content scroll separately from the sidebar so keep an eye out for that change in the future.

Linking to existing content is also something we’re working on and hope to have available soon

Given the overwhelming negative feedback on the new editor, couldn’t you just roll back to the infinitely superior intermediate version, while fixing all the problems in the new one? For the life of me, I cannot work out why you’d inflict something so horrendously unusable on your customer base,

  • @adeleinslovenia After inserting an image just click it and the – and + will change the size between the presets. All images are inserted at full size so click – once to get down to large, twice to get to medium, and three times to go down to thumbnail. You can also click and drag from the corners to go with a custom size.

The save link appears when you have unsaved changes, but disappears once the post is autosaved and you haven’t made any further changes. If you don’t see it that means everything has been saved successfully :)

  • @lizzysiddal I’m sorry you feel that way about the new editor, but you can still access the classic editor in WP Admin by adding /wp-admin/post-new.php at the end of your site address

First fix the forums, it took me hours to figure out how to post here!
I would like the old editor back, it was much better than this piece of junk. The old editor was not broken, so why fix it?
Here’s a good idea: “let’s make the editor cumbersome and take away essential tools.” This had to have been the thought process behind it.

No way to add media easily. No longer able to size things or anything, how nice.
Category and tag functions no more cumbersome than before. Always a pleasure.
No spell check, very nice. While it can’t be trusted it is a great way to alert one to check instead of reading the article 50 times.
Was this thing really designed for phones? How ludacris can you be?!!!

I also like the lie about how everybody wanted this.
So by fixing what was not broken, you have now created something you need to fix.
The new editor works as a preventative of posting. If voices were really heard you guys would bring the old editor back and trash this thing.
