Editor Feedback

You touted “easy access to drafts.” You have to be kidding. At present, I have 141 drafts. I don’t want to have to sit and scroll and scroll and scroll to find something, or lose the ability to skim all drafts in a few seconds.

I don’t need a précis of every draft. I don’t need to see the images already attached. I need the titles, each on its own little line.

The same holds true for published posts. I don’t want to have to scroll forever to find something.

The word count needs to be restored, and spell check. I don’t care how fast and slick your new editor is, reducing functionality is counterproductive.

I’ll be sticking with the wp-admin editor. It’s simple, functional, and flexible.

I like the old way much better. Can we have it back as an option?

Just did a post on my photoblog and loved the way I could group photos. Easy. Thought you would like to hear something nice… after all the crybabies resistant to change haranguing you.

Need some help with the new format please. I upload 30-40 photos a day and under the old format I could pick the photos to upload just for that post but with the format change I haven’t been able to do that. Is this still possible or is that no longer a feature. I would say this and the tags not disappearing as I use them are my only issues with the new format. Any help would be great but until then I will continue to struggle through as WordPress is a major factor of me getting my word out for what I do each day. Thank you for your attention.

Before I inform you of the issues I have come across, I would like to state that I appreciate the work you guys are doing to improve the editor. I like the appearance of the new editor even if there are a few bits and bobs from the old editor missing. I haven’t come across too many major issues, but I have observed a few things.

First, I tend to write in WordPress with the window snapped to half-screen. The new editor feels more constrained than the previous version. I like that it scales in size depending on the dimensions of the window, but it would be nice if the text editor didn’t feel quite so tight.

Second, in order to gain access to some of the additional options in the toolbar above the text editor, while snapped to half-screen, I have to scroll right to reach anything past Alight-Center and Align-Right. All I can really see being a necessity would be having the options stack on each other like they did before (or like they when do when in full screen).

Lastly, in the previous editor, one could easily determine the state that a post was in. If a writer wanted to keep the post as a draft, this could be achieved by modifying the setting. Additionally, the big blue button would change to say “Save Draft” ensuring that one would not unintentionally Publish their post. Simple and easy. Presently, a post is considered a draft so long as it has been saved, and the Publish button has not clicked on. Unfortunately, if a person accidentally clicks the Publish button, he/she has no easy way of reverting the post back to a draft. There is a way, but it requires setting a scheduled date for the post which will bring up a “Revert to Draft” button. The original and simpler functionality should be brought back.

Thank you for your time. I’m going to get back to writing now. :)

First of all, it looks better than the old “new” editor. But I have noticed problems.

    1. No word count.
    2. It posts with Uncategorized, as well as my selected category.
    3. There is no option to include a poll.

And of course, thank you for continuing to keep the old editor through WP Admin. It’s far more functional, and I need the functions it provides that I can’t find in the new editor.

What is a pain in the new setup is the Categories and Tags Box. Gone is the ability to predictive text the name you wanted from your list….what a time waste scrolling down a list to tick and untick an entry…..nor can you jump from say A to N or where ever. WHY cannot it be just like the Tags Box. Nor is the smaller editor panel that helpful.. https://davidoakesimages.wordpress.com/2015/11/18/billy-goat-gruff/

I’m trying to love this new editor…I really am. Maybe I’m just having trouble wrapping my brain around it.

My blog is mostly a photo blog, but I don’t use WP to host my images. I upload my images elsewhere and then display them on my blog.

But it seems like now in order to post an image I need to add it to my media library, even if I just want to post it by URL. The option to do this seems to have gone away, and it’s making me very frustrated. Of course I can just add the HTML myself, but then what’s the point of the fancy editor?

I would love it if you brought back the ability to add media by URL that doesn’t get added to my own media library. Or at least if I had the ability to use the old editor that I actually knew how to use :)

Some positive feedback, though: auto saving is a great feature. Keep fighting the good fight!

After adding a JPG file – it used to be possible to click on it to enlarge (I mean in the blog itself, not in the editing window). I cannot do it now – am I missing something?

    @ kriskarkoski

This Editor was rebuilt from the ground up so nothing was removed, but rather every feature had to be rebuilt. Because of this, we prioritized the most popular features and common requests for things missing from the previous editor into this one, but wanted to launch it to get feedback on what to prioritize next. As you can see from this thread, we’ve gotten a lot of feedback :) The Editor team is already working on enhancements and adding features that were missing at launch so please keep an eye out.”

If this editor has been from the ground up, why was it not considered that basic features have been left out, surely if you are building something from the ground up and surely if you guys used your own product you would know that things like copying a post, adding a poll, word count, manipulating images are all basic bread and butter things of maintaining a blog, for you to leave those out and say things like “Ill add them to the feedback or wish list” or “They weren’t released in this iteration but they will be coming” is frankly an insult to anyone that uses your platform, especially those that are paying for features they are not getting. I feel particularly sorry for the guy (midnightwater) that was told to buy a premium theme or learn HTML just to put a border around an image, c’mon guys you’re supposed to make this stuff easier to do/access.

Then we are told you are going to hide the link for the old editor, you know the one with all the features on it that people you and you have not added to the new editor, it’s like scolding a naughty child except we’ve not been naughty.

Some else asked “What does WordPress gain by removing the link? Why would you make it more difficult for users who like WP Admin by taking it out? Is it a step toward the day when everyone has to use the improvement?” and the answer was “It helps by allowing us to get more people using the new WordPress.com faster. The more people there are using, it the better we’ll be able to do with our work to improve the new and move forward using a new infrastructure that is faster and scales better.”

How amazingly arrogant really, so you release an editor that doesn’t have all the functionality of the original editor, missing basic options and your hiding it because you want us all to use your scaled down editor, surely if anything it should only be hidden once ALL the functionality is in place.

I think you guys are really making it difficult on yourselves (as well as us users), you throw out half baked changes, make it more difficult to use the old system that actually works and then (maybe) update features (seemingly) as and when you see fit then get tons of flame emails in the process, I don’t understand your logic behind the way you do your changes. surely there has to be a better way.

I placed this on another thread, but just dicovered this one, so I’ll re-post here.

I used to use the “new post editor” to modify existing posts. No more.

Although I have done this many times before (is anyone listening?), I will list my own frustrations with this “new editor”.

    1. There is no side menus to access other features of admin (media, settings, etc… all the things that are in the older (classic) post editor.
    2. When I now open the new editor, there is NO “stick post to top” tick box”… even though the WP support says there should be.
    3. When you do open the new post editor for existing post, it opens up at the BOTTOM of the HTML text box. Very inconvenient.
    4. It takes me MUCH longer to complete a post and/or modify post settings using the new editor.
    5. It appears, in the “Sharing” dropdown, that you have to tick off each social media you wish to share with. Why? On classic editor they are always ALL ticked off, then you click “Edit” to change options.
    6. In classic editor, you can drag and drop an image into the text box. With the new editor, I tried this, and was not able to. I like this drag and drop feature. Save me a lot of time and mouse clicks.
    7. I, too, want the formatting toolbar at top of the HTML text editor.

From what I have seen in the development of this new editor, it keeps getting less and less useful… for me, at least. Unless a major change occurs, I’ll always be using the classic editor.

  • @kristinolivia246 Spellcheck is not in the new editor yet, but will be added soon.

The share count is visible by viewing the post on your site and looking at the Sharing buttons.

  • @justmekendra Yes, the feature to easily link to past posts and other content will be added to the new editor soon.

  • @guaromekano If you paste the Flickr link ending in .jpg on a line of its own in the post it will be embedded from Flickr without being added to your Media Library and using your storage. However, the new editor does not yet have size and caption options for embedded images, but that is something we will look at adding in the future.

  • @lenaun Spellcheck is not available in the new editor yet, but we are planning to add it in the near future

  • @cindygurmann Did you make any changes to the post date in the scheduler or it just posted with a different date than the current date? Could you provide a link to the post so I can take a look? Thanks!

At first, I loved this. After posting a post I had been working on for a week though, not so much….

First, it only posted HALF of my article! This was also a scheduled post, so I didn’t catch it right away. I had to go back to “revisions” and find the post I actually wanted posted.

Second, the preview isn’t a true preview anymore. I had to adjust the size of my photos after the post was posted because they were much smaller than the preview showed them as. Also, used to also edit my post as I was reading it in the preview (flipping back and forth) and now you have to get out of the preview completely to make any changes.

Third, Please bring the word count back. Many of us relied on that…

I know this is a work in progress, but changes definitely need to be made.

  • @shoreacres The Editor offers quick access to your latest drafts, but for that many you can visit https://wordpress.com/posts/my/drafts/ which allows you to search your drafts and other posts and clicking them will open them in the new editor.

I’ve noted your feedback for bringing word count and spellcheck to the new editor as well.

  • @tedstrutz Thank you, glad you like it!

In my opinion, the new Editor looks stylish and works fine though little bit slowly from time to time… This is a great job with very good ideas! Really.
