Editor Feedback

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi
    Thank you for your response. However, that was then and whilst I can now save a post, I have to do it manually, pressing Save or Update, but when I go to leave the post it always tells me I have unsaved changes and do I really want to leave. The thing is, that every time I use the editor I don’t know what’s going to work and what isn’t. The most frustrating thing is having to exit the site every time I want to switch from one post to another because it can’t load a different post when I’ve been Previewing or editing another. The Preview screen also often freezes so I can’t scroll but I can see the post behind it scrolling. I also have difficulty copying shortlinks, it takes ages to respond to get the cursor there to highlight the box and sometimes I don’t get the Copy function at all. I am still getting the jumping around of the cursor generally. I am using iOS8.3 Safari.

    @brandonblatter, not being able to paste into the caption area is a bug. I tested and found that it happens in both the old WP Admin editor and the new WordPress.com editor, so it is an old bug that has somehow made it’s way over. I’m sorry for the trouble! I’ve made sure the issue has been filed and noted that you made a comment about it here. (11219)

    @thejuicenut

    I am using iOS8.3 Safari.

    This may explain the trouble in your case. Let me do some research and find out what iOS version is the minimum required. I will probably need to wait until after the weekend, and I will email you a reply once I find out more. Thank you for replying with more detail about the issue you’re facing!

    @rjaybee

    AND DASHBOARD LOST!! That’s the best and most essential bit and I always use it whereas this new stuff is strange

    You should be able to find the WP Admin link at the bottom of your My Sites menu.

    I read all of your comments above and found that several were off-topic from this thread (such as comment settings and trouble with email), and to be respectful of others here and to try to keep this editor feedback thread about the editor I decided to help you with the rest of your concerns by email. I would also be happy to help you in a new help request if you would like. Thank you in advance.

    @heckenwicke, thank you for taking the time to write out your feedback. I went through what you wrote and I’ve made sure each point you raised was noted in our suggestion list. Tracking this data is one of the best things I can do to help you in my role.

    I used to work a lot with BBC-code, mostly with my own tags. Most times the code I paste this way disappears after a few seconds. Sometimes I have to post it three times, and then it stays. (Is this a ritual? A charm?) Sometimes it always disappears.
    So, yea, I get it. No BBC anymore. Why?

    I tried tested BBCode in the WP Admin editor, and it did not work there. Regardless though, I have added a new item to our suggestion list for BBCode for you since this is the first time I’ve seen that particular suggestion mentioned!

    But the bones of WP.com are from the Open Source community, WP.org was there first and did the main work. Seems you want to get free of that heritage…

    The opposite of that is happening, and is at the root of all of this change. The new WordPress.com was recently moved to be open source and it’s a shift WordPress.com has been working on for about a year and a half and that we will continue to work on, and that’s why you’re experiencing some of this trouble with transition. I understand change can be a pain. I’m here to help you the best way that I can.

    Now I am thinking about swtiching to WP.org and host myself. I chose WP.com mainly for being easy to to use and for itsits community.

    I think both options are very good, and it really depends mostly on whether or not you would like to install and maintain WordPress code yourself—if keeping track of the code and making sure things are updated and having the ability to add custom code appeals to you, WordPress.org is a very good choice for a case like that.

    @scarletclark

    I agree with a couple of the comments in here. it is difficult to atempt to improve something such as this which everyone is used to.

    I agree as well. This is a challenge we’re facing head on.

    I have made a note of your feedback about editor width, spell check, and the edit option for inserted images.

    Aslo, there seems to be no way (with what ever keystroke such as shift or Cmd etc) to constrain the ratio of the image when resizing.

    If you don’t hold down a key when you drag the corner handles to resize an image, the aspect ratio should be maintained (no need to hold down a key).

    And finally, it’d be great to get some feedback in here about planned tweaks and changes – or are we all just commenting in a large ‘Room 101’??

    Word count has already been updated since it was a top request and work on link search for existing content is underway. Past that, there is not an official list for what will be updated next or when it will be updated. I’m sorry I don’t have any more specific information for you about that! What I can do to help is collect the information to see what is requested most, after that it goes to the developers to make a decision based on a number of factors including other tasks and projects assigned, usage stats, and including your feedback too.

    @heckenwicke

    Ok. When I tag (on the left, still vanishing toolbox) a list of already-used tags appears. Which is nice. Really!

    But when I want to scroll down that list by touching the scrollbar it provides, the list disappears. I can only scroll it with the mousewheel.

    Why? (My browser? Another beta-testing of a buggy feature?)

    I tested and it does look to me like that one is a bug, although this is the first time I’ve seen it come up in all of the editor feedback I have seen so far myself. I filed an issue for it. While we wait for that issue to be reviewed, another thing that might help you would be to use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move through the list of searched tags.

    Thank you for looking into it. The previous person managed to get some iOS8 patches because editor stopped working altogether when it changed but they only restored the old problems I was having though now allowing me to do composing and publishing, but still with some of the old problems (jumping cursor etc). Hope you manage to sort it out.

    @ajpoliquit

    Just wondering why image URLs I insert in the blog are saved in Media Library. Do they eat up my allotted space?

    When I did this in the old editor, images from other websites (URLs) were not saved there, only images I uploaded directly to WP.

    To get the same effect, just add a direct image link onto a line by itself and it will embed automatically. No need to use the Add Media button if you are trying to rely on an external source for images like you’ve described.

    @fongteacher

    Dislike the new format for Page editing, when I add a new link I can’t search for existing posts to link to!

    Is there a way to default to the old editor? I hate the new editor so much, it’s so limiting.

    Thank you for your feedback. To access the old editor, type /wp-admin at the end of your home page URL and use the links in the left menu.

    @3rdgradeadventures

    It used to be a breeze to upload images to my classroom blog (which has NOTHING fancy, just some text and the occasional set of photos), and today I log in to find all my buttons moved, others nonfunctional, and it’s taken me 15 minutes (so far) to try and upload 8 pictures to a new post. And now I’m finding there is no easy way to edit pictures, so all of mine are now captioned “Olympus Digital Camera” Awesome, thanks.

    It’s possible to caption gallery images at the time you insert or edit a gallery later and get to the captions. To do it when starting a new gallery, click the Add Media button then select multiple images—then click the Edit button at the bottom left or click the edit icon that appears when you hover on any selected image. From there, you will see arrows to the left and right of each selected image and you can add captions on the right.

    There is also a way to edit captions after a gallery has been inserted. To do that, click on the gallery then click the edit icon that appears in the toolbar just above the gallery. Click the Edit tab. You will see a way to add captions within that view.

    @wimwang

    can pictures not more scale

    Images cannot be scaled to larger than the original image size. This is the same compared to the past.

    @adaklara, I think the latest issues you asked about (My Comments in the Reader and screen fluctuating) are separate from editor feedback. I will reply here first, but after that would you mind please opening a separate help request for issues that are not related to the editor? This thread is meant for editor feedback.

    My Comments in the Reader has not yet been moved to the new WordPress.com interface. It will be added later but I am not sure exactly when.

    I’m having trouble reproducing the issue you mentioned about the screen fluctuating. Would it be possible for you to start a new help request at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1 for that issue and include information about your browser version and OS?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @offbeatjim56, could you tell me more about the trouble you’re having adding images? From your description so far, I can’t tell what the trouble could be.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @veryfungi

    Ok, so WP Staff… You wanted to make a different editor. So you throw this cluster at your user base and say deal with it. Even if I could overlook that. Why have you made it more difficult to get to the classic editor? That is my only question.

    There’s a bigger shift happening to update the underlying infrastructure and codebase. All of these changes added together will keep WordPress.com moving forward in a way that’s sustainable and scalable. I am here to help in the best way I can, and to do that I try to document the top requests (currently, the top request is adding link search) and also to file issues for problems as they arise and to help answer questions about where to find things as they move. I’m sorry for the disruption and hopefully I can help you if you have any specific questions about how to accomplish your blogging goals.

    Just to ‘update’ you – haha- today I edited one post and the autosave was working, then I composed a new Page and lost it all because neither the autosave nor the Save button worked!

  • Unknown's avatar

    @thejuicenut, I’m so sorry to hear that! I understand that you are working on iOS 8.3. May I ask if there’s any chance you can update to the latest version of iOS or why you haven’t updated yet—is it because of a hardware limitation or something like that?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hiya, haven’t read everything that’s new (heck I really did read the first 20 pages of this thread…), just wanna say thanks for the info re Open Source et al.

    And, of course, as it is when one feels noticed, I am mollified (oh, I was miffed for several reasons…) and wanna apologize for ranting. Doesn’t help at all.

    I’m using ScribeFire (FF plug in) for now.

  • Unknown's avatar

    P.S. I have never tried BBcode in the ‘classic editor’, it used to work fine with the BeepBoop-Editor [and I must admit I did like the “beep-boop” X) ]

    And I just tried it, and it seems to work again with the new one. Before I couldn’t even use tags like <em></em>, they’d disappear. Now they stay (and BBcode is helpful as long as the html toolbox is missing).

    Maybe it was a bug and got fixed?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi thanks for the quick response
    I don’t have enough storage to update plus there were quite few negative reviews of the update and the extra features it was offering were not what I would use.
