Editor Feedback

I’m having trouble finding the button to make a blog post “sticky,” where it always lives on the top of my blog page with new content under it. Is this a feature that is still available or has it gone away with the new editor? Other than that, I like it a lot, thanks.
Click on the arrow icon and text just above the Preview button to see the sticky post option.

@gaudetetheology, thank you for the feedback. I will try to respond to the biggest direct questions and log the rest.
why is the text blue? It’s harder to read, especially in that font
We have worked on those aspects, and we are matching the AA level of WCAG standards for font size and color in the editor. We are also aware we still may have room for improvement. We’d like to get some feedback about it. I have made a note in our suggestion list about what parts are an issue for you and why.
I’m concerned about how this “auto-saving all the time” feature is going to work on a slow internet connection when I’ve got other tabs open to social media sites that are live updating. This tab seems to be reloading very frequently.
To keep data safer and prevent drafts from being lost, something we saw reported more often in the previous version of the editor, it was decided that more saves should happen automatically. The saves are incremental though, and that means they won’t be as taxing as a full page load. Also, autosaves only happen after a change is detected.
Is there a reason it’s important for me to know that it is “Saving” right now?
Yes, that was added because we found during testing that most people wanted the feedback and reassurance of seeing a notice about the saving as it happens.
– Also, the preview is super-duper-slow to load.
You mentioned having a slow internet connection earlier, and if your connection is very slow, that could affect how fast previews load. If you use the Cmd+Click option, then the preview will load exactly as fast as it did in all other versions of the editor (since that preview depends on the front-end, including post content, not the editor).
And the Home/End keys now seem to toggle between the beginning & end of a *line*, instead of the top and bottom of the *page*.
This is a dealbreaker: the editor is entirely unusable if I can’t use those keys to navigate while I edit.
Is this perhaps a known bug in some browsers? I’m using Firefox 40.0.3 (& I know that’s a bit old) on a Windows 7 laptop.
I haven’t heard anyone else report that issue before, and I will report it as a bug.

Thank you for the helpful replies (2 of them) to my earlier question on adding images to an existing gallery. I actually figured it out before I read your reply. Nonetheless, I appreciate your help.
I am really loving this change. I’m easily finding what I need to publish [save the HTML toolbar].
I do have a request and that is that the editor use my theme’s custom CSS to display my WYSIWYG article. For example, I use different size fonts in my title and a white background for my slideshows.
Please…
Thanks!
Luv your replies to the many questions you have responded to. As to editor width, I see icons at the top, left that indicate the device and likewise change editor width.
I appreciate you!

“… there are currently no plans to remove the WP Admin editor completely. Links to that editor, however, are being removed and you will need to access WP Admin using a bookmark or by typing in /wp-admin at the end of your home page link.” ~ See above
PLEASE keep the WP Admin in its entirety. It WORKS. At least keep the link to it.
What does WordPress gain by removing the link? Why would you make it more difficult for users who like WP Admin by taking it out? Is it a step toward the day when everyone has to use the improvement?
I taught myself WordPress by trial and error. If I had to learn the improved WP from scratch, I would probably give up and move to Blogger.
White space is pretty, but hiding functions and switching locations for the sake of aesthetics (streamlining?) aren’t productive. Replacing words with icons isn’t necessarily an improvement. (“Add Media” is now a little picture of something that might be mountains. Did the change really save that much code?)
In WP Admin, I can go just about anywhere I want–customize, widgets, settings, comments, etc.–from the post/edit page. I often DO want to go elsewhere while I’m writing a post. I don’t want to have to hunt for what I need when it could be visible.
In the improvement, when I scroll down, the left sidebar disappears, covered by the box with the name of my blog, my picture, and Publish. I know those things already. I need the sidebar.
Where do the pix from Zemanta go, and do I have to enable them again?
Can I copy a post in the new editor?
This looks like change for the sake of change. Or for the sake of dumbing things down.
The following aren’t new, but–
a) We used to be able to sign out from any page. Now it takes an extra click. This occurred after an earlier improvement.
b) I can’t see any reblog buttons, anywhere. I’ve emptied the cache in both Chrome and Firefox.I wish I could be positive, but learning that the link to WP Admin will disappear has brought out my negative streak. As for productive, I’m not optimistic, because I doubt my input will make any difference.
I feel like a Cadillac owner required to drive a stripped-down Studebaker while being nibbled to death by ducks. I’ll get there, but I won’t enjoy the ride.

I mean I use to be able to scale an image down if it was to big even if it was the featured image, but now I can’t do that. I run a fashion blog and if the image I want is too big then it can cut off pieces of the product being pictured. Now, with the old editor if I previewed the picture and some of the product was cut as the featured image then I could just scale it down to where everything fit. But now that isn’t the case.

@jalexartis, thank you for the kind words!
I do have a request and that is that the editor use my theme’s custom CSS to display my WYSIWYG article. For example, I use different size fonts in my title and a white background for my slideshows.
I will add this to our suggestion list for you. However, I will also note that it has not been a common request that I have seen in the past.
-
@designsimply, I’m happy that you will add my suggestion and that I’m getting a reply at this time of day [1:56 am EST].
For me, a true real-time editor has to reflect my theme and the mods I have made to it using the custom design I have paid for. Doing so saves preview and thereby time and resources on your end.
For now, I’m done. I may have an issue on my iPhone editor relating to gallery later.
You are a gem!!!

Hi!
My blog is written in the internet-blocked China, and I’m completely dependent on having my own “SAVE” button to hit at any point and as much as I can – since I never know when the VPN will pause and throw me out of the system again.
1) PLEASE add a “SAVE”-button again!
– And keep it visual everywhere and at all times ;)Also when linking – I found it very handy to get a list of my own posts to link directly to. It saves me tons of time from scrolling through the blog entirely to find URL’s.
2) Please add the URL-list from the personal blog
– The icons for different mobile devices are neat, I did however prefer to be able to edit the post at the same time and view the previsit in a separate window. (The loading of pages i really slow in China, so it takes a lot of time to skip back-forth between these…).
– And as someone else pointed, the editing window could be a bit wider.
Otherwise thank you! :)

@kathywaller, thank you for your feedback. I will reply to some points here and log the rest.
What does WordPress gain by removing the link? Why would you make it more difficult for users who like WP Admin by taking it out? Is it a step toward the day when everyone has to use the improvement?
It helps by allowing us to get more people using the new WordPress.com faster. The more people there are using, it the better we’ll be able to do with our work to improve the new and move forward using a new infrastructure that is faster and scales better.
In the improvement, when I scroll down, the left sidebar disappears, covered by the box with the name of my blog, my picture, and Publish. I know those things already. I need the sidebar.
I’ve added your comment about this to our suggestion list.
Where do the pix from Zemanta go, and do I have to enable them again?
Sorry, do you mean pictures you embedded in the past in the WP Admin editor using Zemanta? Since that is not a part of the new editor, I will need to research that a bit, however, I wanted to clarify the question first.
Can I copy a post in the new editor?
That feature has not been added to the editor, and it has been added to the suggestion list.
This looks like change for the sake of change. Or for the sake of dumbing things down.
Of course neither of those are true. The change was made to take advantage of better infrastructure and a new codebase that works well with newer browsers. Also, many changes were made based on past user feedback from here in the forums.
a) We used to be able to sign out from any page. Now it takes an extra click. This occurred after an earlier improvement.
This is a planned update. I am not sure of an exact timeframe for when it will be available though.
b) I can’t see any reblog buttons, anywhere. I’ve emptied the cache in both Chrome and Firefox.
We’re going to work on some changes to reblogging, and in the mean time many of the reblog links were removed from navigation areas. Reblog buttons, however, should still be available on posts directly as long as the blog owner has not disabled them. If you have a specific example you’d like to review, please start a new help request for that since it’s a bit off topic from new editor updates which this thread was made for.

Hi,
First impressions are that this upgrade fixes some of the issues that I had with the old editor. In particular the abysmal category and tag editing.
It looks good and in general it does seem like an improvement over the old one.
But…(you knew this was coming I guess…)
Can you please make it more adaptable to bigger screens. If I enlarge my browser window it still only uses a small part of the available space.
Also, the preview is now somewhat cumbersome. The first preview is useless since it does not really provide a preview but more or less just another window like the editor (at least with the theme I am using). I have to click a second time to get a “real” preview.
Adding images seems to lack some features. I would like to set how the image appears (alignment, size etc…) when I add it not. Right now I have found no other way to set the image parameters than by adding the image with whatever defaults you have chosen and then adjust size and alignment afterwards. Even then I do not seem to have the choice of actually choosing something but just clicking on a minus or plus button.
Granted, I have not spent an enormous time looking into any available options or “hidden” features but anyway, these are my first impressions.

Ohh, do you mean “Edit Image” functions like cropping? If yes, sorry I didn’t understand what you were saying before!
-
Why is there no direct link to toggle between the old editor and the new one? It’s unclear to me what you lose by adding that, and it would be immensely helpful, as there are numerous features that can only be accomplished by using the old editor. When will this feature be added?
Thanks!

1) PLEASE add a “SAVE”-button again!
– And keep it visual everywhere and at all times ;)Save happens automatically now a few times a minute when changes are detected in the editor. If for some reason a change was not saved, a visible “SAVE” link will appear and you can click it to force another save to happen.
2) Please add the URL-list from the personal blog
Do you mean the link manager?
I did however prefer to be able to edit the post at the same time and view the previsit in a separate window.
You can still do this. You can either click Preview and then click the icon with a square and arrow in it. Or you can Cmd+Click or Ctrl+Click on the Preview button directly to open it in a separate browser window or tab (this should work in most browsers).

@perjonsson, thanks for posting about your first impressions.
Can you please make it more adaptable to bigger screens. If I enlarge my browser window it still only uses a small part of the available space.
I will add this to the suggestion list.

In most browsers, you can also get directly to the Preview in a new window or tab by pressing Cmd+Click or Ctrl+Click directly on the Preview button. In the preview screen you mentioned, in addition to the preview options for mobile and tablet sizes, there is a full-width desktop preview button, and once you select that it should be remembered for the next time you click Preview.
You are correct that alignment and size are now set in the image toolbar after the image is added to the post. The -/+ icons work to cycle through the preset image sizes: thumbnail, medium, large, and full.

The new editor is slooooowww. The typing box isn’s as wide as before, this makes it difficult to edit my work and sort out images in the text. Also there’s no spell check or word count. I used to be able to see the word count, now it’s gone. Please if you can’t restore the old version, at least give us the option to choose between the two. We understand you worked hard on this, but no point fixing what wasn’t broken. please. I’m really frustrated right now trying to use this editor. I had to copy my work into Microsoft word and arrange it there which is taking double time now.
-
The new editor looks nice, but there are a few key features missing for me.
1. The HTML toolbar. I use HTML mode regularly and I always used the toolbar to insert image links etc. I know you said that many people didn’t miss it but what’s the point of removing this feature? Those people who don’t miss probably wouldn’t mind if it was still there.
2. Link to existing content. It was so comfortable to be able to click the link option and just select a chapter I had recently published (e.g. for a table of contents). Why remove this? As far as I remember it was togglable anyway.
3. The width of the editor. I mean sure it might increase readability but I am there to WRITE not to read. And for writing I would definitely prefer a wider editor.
I really liked the Beep Boop editor before, but now I think I will switch to the wp admin editor again, until these features come back, thanks wordpress…
-
PS: Showing the word count was really important for me too. I would love to see that feature again.
-
However, I also noticed that you are now able to edit the blog posts URL. That’s an awesome feature! Now if you would add some of the features of the old version again, I will be very happy to use Beep Boop again.
-
Hello Editor, can I know how to embed image from external URL without having it upload through ‘Insert Media’ or typing in the HTML code? This feature was in the previous ‘Insert Media’ function but seems to be moved somewhere/totally removed.
I am not fond of uploading images into WordPress’ Media Library, as a free user the space is rather limited, would very well prefer the old ‘Insert via URL’ back without having to upload the said image into the media library.
-
I link to my Flickr images by pasting their URL in the URL image load field – that is working.
What ISNT WORKING as far as I can find, is I used to be able to add in a second link to a larger size of the file and post a caption to ask readers to click on the image to view a big size – as a photographer and digital artist its important that the fine detail be made available to viewers.
That functionality to add the link to the larger size appears to be gone completely – its not there when add the image and its not an option when you go in to edit once its in your post
BRING THIS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
