Editor Feedback

Why is there no direct link to toggle between the old editor and the new one? It’s unclear to me what you lose by adding that, and it would be immensely helpful, as there are numerous features that can only be accomplished by using the old editor. When will this feature be added?
It helps by allowing us to get more people using the new WordPress.com faster. The more people there are using, it the better we’ll be able to do with our work to improve the new and move forward using a new infrastructure that is faster and scales better.

I’m not sure if it counts as UAT but there have been feedback tests for the new editor. The feedback is publicly accessible at https://horizonfeedback.wordpress.com/2015/09/14/call-for-testing-editor/.
Not trying to be critical here – but I would think this is the type of feedback you would have received during the beta stage.
I have indeed pointed out the missing toolbar and “Add media” functionality in HTML view back in September. See my comment for further details. :)

When writing from right to left (in Hebrew), the cursor is still running from left to right. Punctuation marks therefore remain in the beginning of the line instead of its end. This makes editing very complicated.

@gossip4jesus
The new editor is slooooowww.
May I ask if you are using an updated browser version?
Is it only slow on the first load and then fast after that?
Are you behind a VPN or firewall filter by chance?
Please if you can’t restore the old version, at least give us the option to choose between the two. We understand you worked hard on this, but no point fixing what wasn’t broken. please. I’m really frustrated right now trying to use this editor. I had to copy my work into Microsoft word and arrange it there which is taking double time now.
There are two versions of editors available to you: one is in WP Admin and you may bookmark access to it and the other is the new WordPress.com editor.
I’m sorry you are frustrated! Please try to give it a little more time to get used to the change. Patience is a virtue and you might find you like some of the updates more than you do when you are first faced with a change.
Regarding copying from Microsoft Word, you might really enjoy using an offline editor such as Windows Live Writer which was made in partnership with Microsoft. Please see https://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/windows-live-writer/ for more details if that sounds interesting to you.

>>Ick!<< I want a full-feature editor. If I want to tweet, I’ll go to Twitter. The new editor is missing the ability to easily link to previous posts, missing the HTML toolbar, missing spell check, etc. etc. Another perfectly good interface “simplified.”

Hello Editor, can I know how to embed image from external URL without having it upload through ‘Insert Media’ or typing in the HTML code? This feature was in the previous ‘Insert Media’ function but seems to be moved somewhere/totally removed.
I am not fond of uploading images into WordPress’ Media Library, as a free user the space is rather limited, would very well prefer the old ‘Insert via URL’ back without having to upload the said image into the media library.
This has come up a few times so far, but not a lot relative to other feedback such as word count and link search. I will keep an eye out for additional feedback about this and keep track of it, and I have added it to our suggestion list for you already.
@lensaddiction I am fully aware of that, I copy paste imgur’s embed link, and the thumbnail doesn’t show up, leaving it as a http text ‘image from imgur’ or something.
I think a thumbnail should show up if the link is a direct image link. It has to be direct (i.e. end in a recognizable image extension such as .jpg). If you find a direct image link that does not work, please include it in a reply and I will test it and file an issue if needed.
A bit of update, as with @lensaddiction I found out they removed the said feature and replaced it with direct formatting just by pasting the image URL into the editor, but yes, it still lacks the feature to put a link/caption/alternate text onto the image without going through HTML.
I tested this and I see what you mean. I filed a feature request to see if it can be updated. It may take some time as it has not been a popular request from what I can see in feedback so far—I am still collecting feedback though.

Linking is done automatically, as I’ve just found out, but without going through HTML, you can no longer link the image to a different URL other than the image’s URL itself, and you cannot make it opens in another tab/browser window.
Maybe I’m missing something but I think I was able to do so. Just click on the image in the visual editor once and then the “Link” button. This should open a new window where you can put your external link and find a checkbox for the link to open in a new tab|window.

What ISNT WORKING as far as I can find, is I used to be able to add in a second link to a larger size of the file and post a caption to ask readers to click on the image to view a big size – as a photographer and digital artist its important that the fine detail be made available to viewers.
Those functions are already there. Click on an image in the editor, then click the link icon in the edit toolbar to add a link. The URL for the original image will be pre-filled. To add a caption, click on the image then click on the icon that looks like a comment bubble in the image toolbar that appears.

When writing from right to left (in Hebrew), the cursor is still running from left to right. Punctuation marks therefore remain in the beginning of the line instead of its end. This makes editing very complicated.
That is something our team is aware of, and I’m hoping we can fix that in the future so the editor defaults to right to left for you. For now, one option to fix the cursor and punctuation is to change the direction of the text in your browser when you are using the editor.
For example, in Chrome you can hover over the cursor, right-click, and go to Writing Direction > Right to Left. Here is a screenshot of that option: https://cloudup.com/caDCglWZaBt
If you have questions about that, or if you’re using a different browser and aren’t sure how to change the direction there, please let me know.

@creativebex There was an issue with accessing the new page editor from certain browsers that has since been fixed. Could you try editing the page again? (if you run into trouble clearing your browser cache may help)

@headphonecommute, thank you for the feeback. Would you be interested in participating in early access to new features and helping to test?

Hi @designsimply! You said:
On the width of the editor, the current width is more optimized for readability than making the width variable, which wouldn’t be similar to most themes which also have a fixed content width in most cases.
Got it. Scanning through this thread this morning I see at least one other person saying reading width feels restrictive when writing. I’m in the same boat — would like a little more width.
In my posts, I size most images to 700 px wide. In the old, original editor, they show at that width, with room to spare. Sometimes I do an image post, where the image is 1024 px wide. I just can’t get a good sense of the post with the editing area being so narrow.
Testing a little bit just now I opened today’s post, an image post, and tried to resize the image by dragging a corner. It is a confusing user experience. I wanted the image to be 1024 px wide, but as you can see in the screencast linked below that it is very difficult to get that right. It’s ultimately easier to switch to html view and just do it manually. Moreover, when you start dragging the corner, it doesn’t start with the image’s current actual width; it starts with its apparent width in the editor.

In order to place a right-aligned picture in a new post that links to a URL (something that used to be straight-forward) I had to open an old post and manually cut and paste in the appropriate HTML because there’s no way to do it in the new editor.
@dmfabritius This is possible in the new Editor. To do so, insert the image you’d like to use. Images are inserted at full-size, so before right-aligning it you will need to make it smaller by either clicking the image to open the image toolbar and clicking the – icon to get to the size you want or by dragging the corner of the image to make it smaller.
Once it’s sized down there is a right align option in the image toolbar (which opens when the image is selected). To add a link, just click the image, then click the link icon in the toolbar. The link will autofill with a link to the full size image, but you can replace it with any link if you’d like to link it to somewhere else.
More clicks, more scrolling around, more work to add attributes like categories (and Uncategorized is turned on by default so that I have to remember to turn it off every time?), tags, excerpts, location. Everything is collapsed and hidden every time you start creating a new post, and adding attributes to images is now an extra step where before it was right there.
We plan to address unchecking the default category, remembering your preference for which option boxes are open, and advanced image options in the future and I will add your feedback to those issues.

Every change is a bit of adjusting, so I get that.
But AM I getting crazy? I can’t get any video embedded. If I hit the add media button and then through URL and I copy the URL it says ‘I am sorry but this type is not comaptible’.
It sounds like you are trying to upload an image instead of embedding it. Can you try placing the image link on a line by itself in the editor? Note: it does need to be a supported embed type.

Editor not working for me on https://urcseatonsince1999.wordpress.com/
Am using Windows 10 with IE11.0 but ok with Firefox.I just tested on IE11 on Win10 and I was able to create a new post and publish it. We did fix a bug with the WP Admin visual editor for IE11 late last night. Can you please try clearing your browser cache as a basic troubleshooting step and reply back here with more detail if you are still having trouble after that, such as whether you see any error messages or a spinner or describe what exactly is going wrong?
[UPDATE: Oh! just saw your later reply that everything is fine now. Cool. :)]

@rachelmcr
Thank you, this seems to help, but I hope you can fix that soon. It is really inconvenient to write this way. -
@lboogie314 The size of featured images cannot be changed. The Featured Image that appears once it’s set in the Editor is to give you an idea of what it will look like when posted, but every theme uses Featured Images differently so it will be cropped according to your theme just like it was in the old editor and WP Admin.
If you believe something has changed with how Featured Images are handled please start a new forum thread on that topic specifically with a link to a post from the new editor you’re having trouble with and we’ll be happy to take a closer look.

I switched back to Classic Editor after 5 minutes of using the new editor because I use my blog to post images and the new options are SO limited – where are the pre-set image sizes and the option to enter a custom size without going through the HTML? I like to link to a larger image but I prefer different size previews depending on orientation. Also, linking to media was previously automatic but for some reason I had to go through and edit each image separately because they didn’t link to anything today.
As a side note, thank you for bringing back the checkbox list of Categories and the option to create New Categories inside the post – I was missing that in the previous editor and it took me a while to fix the mess that was my Categories recently.
Lastly, I didn’t realise Classic Editor still existed because there was no link – I was about to give up on WordPress completely but decided to google how to roll back the Editor first and found that hint in a news article.
