Editor Feedback

  • @silentwolfie Could you confirm if you are using Internet Explorer? We’ve found an issue with page up/down not working as expected in IE that we plan to fix.

  • @monkeynailart Thanks for trying the new Editor! We launched with the most commonly used image features, but do plan to add more advanced options back in a future update, including custom sizes and remembering link preferences and I’ve noted your feedback.

    @jimgrey

Testing a little bit just now I opened today’s post, an image post, and tried to resize the image by dragging a corner. It is a confusing user experience. I wanted the image to be 1024 px wide, but as you can see in the screencast linked below that it is very difficult to get that right. It’s ultimately easier to switch to html view and just do it manually. Moreover, when you start dragging the corner, it doesn’t start with the image’s current actual width; it starts with its apparent width in the editor.

Thanks for the screencast. That’s very cool. :) I see what you mean about sizing images to be wider than the allotted width. I’ve filed the width issue in our suggestion list and we’ll need to wait for an update about that (I think it’s a bigger change than it seems, so it may be something for the future). In the short term, the best workaround I can think of for the workflow you’re describing would be to make sure you have some preset image sizes that you like saved in WP Admin > Settings > Media and then size images accordingly using the -/+ buttons in the image toolbar which work to cycle through those sizes. Be careful because changing the WP Admin > Settings > Media sizes will also change existing images using class names like size-thumbnail, size-medium, and size-large. If you change it and don’t like it, you should be able to change it back. If you need a custom image size outside of those presets, editing the HTML and taking out the class name and adjusting the width, height, and query string numbers is the best route for now (hopefully that would be a rare case though and the preset sizes will suffice).

@designsimply: I didn’t know about being able to set media sizes! I’ll try that. I have always (always) dragged my images to size or tweaked the HTML, so I shouldn’t have any images set as size-thumbnail, etc.

I test software for a living; tools like screencast are part of my everyday arsenal.

Hi! Another person here who is seriously missing the “word count”. A very useful tool for me to keep track of the length of a post.

I would also like to be able to write in a full screen mode, and found that the toggle to full-screen in the previous editor was better for my writing. The new editor functions well and is quick but feels claustrophobic when I have to write in a narrow window and my text is always at the bottom of the screen.

Is there a way to use the previous editor or is it gone?

P.S. – I truly love WordPress and the creativity that it allows!

I would recommend checking the HTML to make sure anyway.

Whereabouts? Would you be interested in getting early access to upcoming WordPress.com changes and helping to test? :)

Aside: I really like ScreenFlow for screencasts. I’ve tried Jing in the past but didn’t stick to it.

I do not like it. I am not against change, I have seen enough in my computer life and I cannot stop them. Now please tell me where I can find the good old template that worked perfectly for me without having to search for things that are no longer there. Thankyou.

Creating and editing is now absolutely horrendous. This was not well thought out, unfortunately. It’s called a “high speed editor” but it’s now taking me twice as long to do anything.

How do you switch back to the ‘Classic’ editor – whatever that is? What WordPress seem to forget is that many/most bloggers are not techies but people who have interesting things to post about and struggle with technology. It’s a pity that those with a fetish for tinkering with things that work perfectly don’t take this into account.

Anyway, how do I switch back to the ‘Classic’ editor – keep it very simple please!!

@angloswiss and @collectireland, please type in /wp-admin after your home page address and use the links in the left menu.

@midnightwatcher, I can help you better if you include specifics. What is going wrong and how can I help you?

The option to link to existing content is also missing on pages and posts. Will this feature return?

  • Unknown's avatar

@collectireland, you’re welcome :) I’ve been to Ireland a few times and I absolutely love it. It’s really cool that you have a site about antiques and collectibles there. Thanks for being a part of WordPress.com! Having great people blogging here is what really sets WordPress.com apart.

Aside: I can’t believe you collected British red phoneboxes once upon a time!! :) :)

@boneorchards, yes. Link search is a planned update. We just need to wait a bit for it to get added.

Not sure what the value is of the changes, but that’s me pretty consistently when it comes to stuff like this. Notably…

Why get rid of the word count feature? Or, did you not get rid of it, and I just can’t find it? It was pretty useful for those of us who have a tendency to ramble. One of my goals here is to tighten my stuff up so seeing that word count in the bottom right at all times was super helpful.

Also the entire tool bar off to the left goes away when we scroll, and adding tags and categories is much clunkier than it was before.

Also when we “view post” after publishing or finishing an edit, it opens in the same window. Why? Was always helpful to have an edit window open after a freshly pressed post.

Also the featured image creates a bunch of empty space at the top of the article.

It’s just clunkier feeling and the earlier version was much better in my view. More importantly, the earlier version wasn’t broken. I’ll get used to the new version and when you update it again…I’ll be annoyed again. That’s just the way it goes. We are all so dependent on toys and tools that have functionality and interface dictated to us by those in your roles. Your rollouts (and those of our operating systems, and mobile devices, and social platforms, etc) are all advertised to “Improve our experience! *big smiley face!*” but in my experience rarely-if-ever do. It’s just a new learning curve usually fraught with more bugs that need to be worked out than were mitigated just for trying.

My snappy, unfiltered/unedited feedback after your Twitter account asked me to share here. Ultimately I love the site and opportunity to write here and have a website for a small price…

…I just loved it a lot more before today.

I have read many of the posts on this string and many of the replies. There is obviously widespread dissatisfaction and many assurances that complaints will be rectified with future updates or go on a list. My question: what was the hurry that compelled omission of basic and extensively used features like link search, word count, and spell check? (I can spellcheck this post but not posts and pages on my own website!) It’s always easier to get something right the first time than to go back and fix it, especially when you are revising something that worked quite well for most of us who were using it. You’re making the Obamacare rollout look good.

After looking around at the new editing layouts, I am definitely not a fan of these changes. The last editing layout was perfect for me. Is there any way that I can revert back to that? I don’t mean the classic editing that I’ve seen people mention that goes back to the Admin dashboard.
My other complaint on Twitter has already been addressed but to make it duly noted, it was the ability to link to previous blog content without having to actually look up the URL.

@dht3265 and @painintheass1976, word count was not removed, the editor has been rewritten to take advantage of infrastructure and codebase changes and the word count has not been added in yet. There are bound to be a few issues like this in a rollout of this scale—spellcheck is another example. Scale is a factor. We want to roll out as many updates incrementally sooner rather than later in order to speed up development overall.

    • I like the way captions on photos work now. (They seldom worked for me before and I constantly had to go back and fix things. Like the picture would jump to the top of the post and I’d have to put it back where it belonged. Irrelevant now.) However, just tried to edit a caption and it flipped out. Had to rewrite it. Not a big deal.
    • I also like that I can add a featured image via URL now. You could not before so if I hosted my photo offsite (which I do mostly now) I had to save that photo to my computer or phone and upload it there. This feature is great. :)
    • Still having trouble in the WYS editor when I want to add a line break between photos. It just will not let me and I have to go to HTML to manually add one in. Not sure how to fix this but it’s annoying and I work around it.

Stuff others have said but I’d like to reiterate:

    • I also definitely prefer a wider editing window. I wish we could either resize it or have it expand with the size of our browser. (I’ll also check out the windows live software mentioned for editing because it appeals to me for the editing space).
    • Linking to existing content is in the works, I know, but I will definitely miss that feature in the meantime.
    • Wish the sidebar and html/WYSIWYG buttons would travel with me so I don’t have to scroll.
