Editor icons not displaying correctly

  • Unknown's avatar

All the buttons in my editor are showing up wrong. Instead of the image for “bold”, “Italic”, “font color” etc. they show up as small rectangles with F2 and a number ranging from 00 to 23. The button text shows when hovering over it, but it takes forever to format a post, when having to search around for which button to use. Is this a bug or do I need to change settings somewhere, please?

The error shows up in both the new and the classic mode, and in both visual and text mode. I have posted a screen print of it here: https://allroadsleadtoroam.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/wp-problem.png

    I use FireFox, fully updated.
    OS: Windows Vista, fully updated.

All help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much in advance.

I can add that the problem does not occur when using Firefox on a comp with Windows 7 Home Premium as an OS. Is it a Vista related issue, and if so, can I somehow fix it, please?

Can no one help with this, please??

Thank you for the response, timethief. It is much appreciated.

I am aware the staff here must be swamped and even more so with the holidays upon us all. It was not intended as impatience as much as merely a wish to be proactive in catching the eye of members who might have experience and insight to share on this particular issue, rather than just waiting silently until my post is buried and dropping off the board completely. My apologies if you took it to be anything else.

I am already subscribed to the topic, and as noted in my initial post both my OS and browser are fully updated. The problem seems isolated to Vista OS, as it does not occur on the same settings on Windows 7.

Thank you again for your reply and belated season’s greetings to you :)

    Hi there,

Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention! I have put this in front of our team which has been working on that editor and as soon as I have any additional information from them I will let you know!

In the mean time, you can always use our original editor right here which hopefully is still working for you:

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention.

Thanks so much, amightywp. I really appreciate it.

The original editor unfortunately also has the same error occurring, so I am using the text editor (manual coding) for now. :)

Thank you so much for your attention and assistence with this!

Oh I see! I didn’t realize from your previous message that it was happening in both. When did this start happening? Did it coincide with a specific browser update? And is it happening in all browsers, or just in Firefox?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am not sure when it started, as I have been absent from WP for a while, but I first noticed it when I logged in again in early/mid December.

The problem does not seem to occur in Chrome, and only happens in Firedox on my laptop, which runs Vista OS. On my stationary comp, which runs Windows 7 OS and Firefox, WP displays just fine – so the problem seems isolated to Vista.

I don’t know if this is related, but I will mention it simply because it may help pinpoint a time frame and impact zone. Around the time when Apple released the iOS8 update for iphones and tablets (early November) I noticed that Firefox started having trouble displaying normal body text – it would seem to be partially missing on many (and completely unrelated websites). WP was one of the affected sites.

This was again exclusively a Vista issue, and only Firefox and IE were by this, Chrome was not.

I discovered that if I manually enforced specific fonts on the browser, rather than allowing websites to choose freely, then the missing text would display as it should again.

When I initially noticed the buttons displaying wrong on WP (the issue I reported here), I tried to backtrack the manual font override in Firefox to see if the issue was related to the forced font selection. It does not seem to be, though. Even with the settings back to default (websites choosing fonts freely) the WP button still display wrong in Firefox on Vista OS.

As I said, I do not know, if this font issue is at all related to the missing WP buttons, or whether the iOS8 update had ANY relation to it at all. I simply noted that the problem of the missing text started occuring after that update was released. Maybe a compatibility issue arose when Firefox adapted to work with iOS8 systems, and somehow this conflicts only with old Windows OS, like Vista. I don’t know. For sure the font issue in and of itself has nothing to do with WP, it is exclusively a Firefox/Vista issue, but as it also involves display issues, I thought it worth mentioning in relation to the missing WP buttons I reported here.

I hope this may be helpful to your team. If there is anything else I can do to provide more details, please let me know. I very much apprecite all your hard work.

    Thank you all. :)

    Hiya,

Given that you are experiencing this issue widely it doesn’t sound like there is a problem here with WordPress.com. I can tell you after discussing it with our developers that this behavior generally happens when you disable the use of custom fonts in a browser’s settings, and instead try to manually enforce your own font choices.

If you go in to your browser and check “Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above” then it should allow our icons to load correctly, assuming that there is no wider issue with either your OS or browser.

I’m sorry we cannot be of more assistance!

Thank you for the quick response. However, as I explained (perhaps not so well or not clearly enough), the problem I am experiencing with WP arose LONG before I changed my browser settings. The onky reason I made those changes to begin with was because websites (WP included) were not displaying correctly. Changing the settings resolved some of the problems, but not all of them, including the missing WP editor buttons.

Furthermore, as also mentioned, even if I return the browser to default settings, allowing sites to choose their own fonts, the buttons still do not display right in WP.

I made sure to verify this before posting the issue here.

I understand. The custom fonts are one of what appears to be a larger puzzle, but we do know that in order for our site to display correctly on healthy systems then those are the settings which work.

As this is an issue which is affecting multiple sites on your PC, I can only direct you to seek assistance with either Microsoft or a PC expert of some sort. It’s clear that the problem is wide-spread within your system and not limited to our site. As such, there isn’t anything which we at WordPress.com can assist you with I’m afraid.

I really wish now I had not sought to add that information, as clearly it has derailed this exchange somewhat away from the actual issue. Or perhaps it is my command of English as a second language or tech speak which are inadequate. Either way, the fault is mine entirely.

Firstly, please allow me to reiterate that I very much appreciate any and all help the WP staff or forum members can provide. It is a wonderful service and one that is time and time again puts WP far beyond its competitors.

That said, I fear the point of what I have sought to express has gotten lost in the process of weeding out a potential cause for this problem. So, please, allow me to attempt once more to clarify the problem.

The custom font settings are unrelated to the issue of the malfunctioning WP buttons, as I have explained previously here. This is a fact, because:

    1) The issues on WP arose BEFORE I made any changes to how fonts are displayed in the browser.
    2) The problem with the WP buttons persists regardless of whether the browser is set to custom fonts or not. On either setting, they malfunction.
    3) Switching to custom fonts resolved all missing body text issues on all sites, including WP (except for the editor buttons, and as stated in #2 they are affected either way).

So, in other words, I HAVE no issue with multiple sites. I DID, and it was resolved. No other sites or editors display this problem, or anything similar to it, in any of my browsers on any settings. The only reason I mentioned it at all was, as also stated, to guess at a time frame in reply to your queries, and to make it known that the option of switching font settings had been tried and proved to have no effect on the problem.

The problem IS limited to WP and WP only, and therefore it was and is my hope that it will be addressed based on those facts, rather than simply dismissing it on inaccurate premises. For my part, if I have been unclear or given cause for misunderstandings in my replies, it was unintentional and I apologise.

If the malfunctioning WP editor buttons is not an issue the staff or tech support here can address or suggest solutions for, I understand completely, and will indeed seek assistence elsewhere, so that I can continue to use my WP blog.

Thank you kindly for your time and assistence so far in this matter.

One of our developers was able to dig out a machine which is running Windows Vista and loaded up a fully up-to-date version of Firefox and IE. They were not able to replicate any troubles with the fonts not displaying.

This suggests that there is something at work on your computer which is not related to Windows Vista, Firefox, IE, or WordPress.com itself.

    • We would recommend that you check to make sure that there are no recently installed fonts which might be conflicting with our Dashicon fonts. You can check your fonts under Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Fonts
    • Disable plugins or load the page in a private browsing session to ensure that a plugin conflict is not occurring.
    • In Firefox, type about:config in the address bar, agree to the warning, and search for gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled. The “value” column should be set to true. This will only apply to Firefox but may be worth checking nonetheless.
    • Have the user open the developer tools using the Menu > Developer > Inspector. In the right sidebar of the panel displayed, there is a “Fonts” tab which displays all fonts loaded for the current page. “Dashicons Regular” should be one of the fonts shown here.
    • The Dashicon fonts themselves may be getting blocked by some setting in your firewall or antivirus. Unfortunately I can’t give any advice when it comes to these programs, but you may want to consult either of these.

    Hope this helps!

  • Unknown's avatar

It DID! Thank you very much.

I removed some recently installed fonts and verified the “true” value in the about:config menu, and it seems to have done the trick. The WP buttons are now displaying correctly in both editors.

Thank you very much for your tenacity and assistance in resolving this matter. I really appreciate it.

Well wishes and happy New Year’s to you and the WP Staff.

I’m so glad to hear that you were able to sort it out! Congratulations on getting through this really wacky problem. :)

Hope you have a great week!
