Editor is not loading

Is this a known issue for some? It’s not because of the new type of editor. May 22nd I was still able to use it and I don’t remember changing anything, but now there is briefly some placeholder (empty) UI elements at the top while the editor is loading and then I only get an empty page.

The site I need help with is [visible only to staff] (email visible only to moderators and staff).

  • Hi there,

It looks like you are using Firefox as your browser, yes? If so, what happens if you switch to another browser temporarily like Google Chrome or MS Internet Explorer/Edge? Do you have the same issue in other browsers as well? Or is the issue only with Firefox?

    Thanks for the additional info!

Sorry, but I have Waterfox (2020.10) browser addons running and am avoiding mentioned browsers for a good reason, not to just throw that all away on a vague suspicion and log into a personal account in the most unfiltered way, especially since the editor used to work until recently and I have no information about whether there has been code changes in the web site there since then. Since I just barely found the mental focus, I carefully experimented with turning certain addons off or reconfiguring them, but it seems more like a workaround instead of a solution. I’ve done this stuff too often with only downsides.

What I can say is that besides the empty page displayed, the help question mark circle does appear in the lower right corner.

Also, addons I am using that can affect web content are few, and where feasible I disabled them.
    – I looked through my uBlock Origin and saw nothing that is so extreme that it could justify the editor not working. I tried disabling some stuff that doesn’t really look like it could affect it but might have been relatively recent additions.
    – Stylus only affects specific websites. Same for various Youtube-focused addons.
    – Cookie AutoDelete is installed to allow more instead of blanket-block more.
    – CanvasBlocker is installed, but wherever that was an issue, it was clearly communicated and I could decide how to proceed. And I wouldn’t want to turn that off. Plus, I didn’t even touch its settings for quite a while.

Considering how well other web content runs with my browser/addon config, I’d say it is not (just) an issue on my end.

  • Hi there,

What you said makes sense for sure. This very well could be an issue on our end, and I think the goal now is to pinpoint the conflict.

Since Firefox (Waterfox) is the preferred browser, can you see if the editor loads while browsing privately/in incognito mode? That way, we can rule out any potential conflicts with extensions/add-ons, whether it had to do with an update from our end to cause the conflict with one of the add ons or not.

    Thanks,

Logging into a user account while in ‘incognito mode’ kinda defeats the purpose of preventing data association with what’s left when no addons are running to curb that.
And on the blank editor page UBO is reporting associated Youtube tracking even. – There’s also wp.com stuff, but I already tried allowing cookies for that domain and it didn’t help.
Canvas Blocker isn’t reporting anything on the non-loading editor if I set it to spoof, but if I set it to ask, it’s giving me dialogues whether to allow, so I cannot exclude that that’s possibly interfering somehow. (Then again, if the fancy new editor relied on canvas drawing, wouldn’t that always have been an issue and not just since May or so?)

I got no response from a support ticket I sent yet, otherwise I could have mailed the HTML code I’m getting and a screenshot of what the result looks like.
There’s a Calypso header, then lots of variable definitions and function stuff, then some java script lines about fallback, ending with scripts for creating dialogue for developer mode, one about ServiceWorker and then the common one for when JavaScript is not enabled, and after that the body and HTML are closed.

  • Would you please check with all browser add-ons disabled regardless?

This wouldn’t be the first time we were caught in the crossfire from an overzealous ad blocker.
