Editor loses formatting

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there something wrong with the WordPress editor? I lose all my formatting when I copy text into a new blog entry. I have been doing this forever, but today it’s not working. I love all my line breaks, bolding, italics, etc.

I’m having the same problem today!

For years, I’ve been cutting and pasting text from google Docs into the Visual Editor, which then converts the font and formatting to my theme format.

Today it suddenly doesn’t work and format is tiny and wrong. In the Text Editor I see a bunch of <span> tags with different font formatting after I paste – it’s not the font I input, nor is it the theme default font. Here’s what it looks like:

    <span style=”font-size: 15px; font-family: Ubuntu; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;”>

My older posts still have the simple <p=”ltr> tags for the formatting. What has changed and how can I get back to being able to cut and paste?

We’ve made some changes to our Visual Editor today. Please see the following thread for more information.

I particularly notice that wordpress editor now won’t copy hyperlinked text from word files. Always before you could just highlight whatever it is in word, copy, then past in wordpress and it would transfer just fine.

Now it doesn’t work at all! It worked fine on the 23rd, and not at all today.

I have also looked at the post you recommend but it doesn’t give any solutions to this brand-new problem.

Any ETA on when you are going to correct this? It’s a real pain to have to reconstruct all the linked-to text.

Thanks for any help you can give –

Note: I should have added, when transferring hyperlinked text from word to the wordpress editor – it REMOVES the hyperlink and just pastes the text.

I just checked – and not only will linked text not paste correctly, but ANY formatting such as italics, underline, etc., also are removed by this new editor.

That will make for some seriously time-consuming re-editing if this is allowed to remain this way.

@jackiedana, I tried again pasting from Word into the WordPress editor and everything goes single spaced, no bold, no italics, etc. I went to the link you referenced and did what it suggests, but no cigar. I tried it both in text and visual mode. To make matters worse, if added back in the formatting in visual mode, but it doesn’t stay after I press save. It reverts back to no formatting. They do stay when I am in text mode and it adds the html tags. Are other people having success pasting Word documents. It will be very frustrating if I have to keep adding everything back in after a paste. Thanks!

    @timethief

Yes, thanks, I posted there plus put a word file in media library so he can see what kinds of things are not transferring properly.

FOR ANYONE HAVING TROUBLE WITH PASTING FROM WORD

I have a temporary fix, that’s kind of a pain but it will work until wordpress figures out what the problem is.

I opened the word file I want to past from then chose File – Save As Web Page and stuck on my desktop.

open it in your browser – THEN copy what text there that you want to paste, and then paste it into the visual editor of word and it works!

There’s a bunch of extra line spaces but other than that all your formatting – including tables, will be there. Worked for me.

Hope this helps in the meantime –

@mcclaughry, I downloaded your MS Word doc, opened it in MS Word for Mac 2011, copied the entire document into my clipboard and pasted it into a new WordPress.com post. When using the quick post option as well as the full visual editor, your table and hyperlinks worked properly. They did not work in the text editor, however, but that is to be expected.

So basically, I’m not sure yet why it works for me and not for you.

@ajprokop and @mcclaughry What version of Word are you both using? And which browser/browser versions?

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t use MS Word – I had been pasting from Google Docs in “text paragraph” format, which preserved links and line breaks, but converted to WP theme font. Now it converts to a tiny Times font – though I’ve tried Ubuntu, verdant, and trebuchet with the same results.

Since I don’t know what font is used as my theme default (not Times), I can’t get my text to match previous entries unless I use the plain text input which strips links as well.

I’m getting pretty upset by this unannounced, and major, change which has left me without a viable editing option for now. It seems WP is unconcerned and not providing any help.

Maybe time to move to Blogger? I’d really rather not, but I can’t use WP the way it is now if I have to manually add all the links to my pasted text.

Please, please, come up with a viable option to paste text with links that converts to theme default font & style.

@zypczyk I would certainly like to assist you and other users with this change. I appreciate your patience in helping me troubleshoot these issues so I can report any unexpected behavior to our developers.

I’ve been testing pasting from MS Word and Google Docs directly into the Visual editor. In both Firefox and Chrome on a Mac, it looks like fonts (and font sizes) are not carried over, so you will need to address font styling on your WordPress.com site.

In Chrome, formatting like Bold and Italic is carried over from MS Word but not Google Docs; both work in Firefox.

Both should allow you to paste bulleted lists, tables and hyperlinks.

If you or others are not able to reproduce my results, more information on your word processor and browser/browser version would be helpful.

Sorry, Jackie, I didn’t realize you were explaining this on your test blog. I appreciate your quick response and efforts to reproduce this issue.

My problem is that I can’t get my posts into the theme font (family and size). Previously, I did all the formatting (except links and paragraphs) in the WP Visual editor to keep the theme defaults. I wouldn’t mind pre-formatting my posts in Gdocs or Word, but then the font isn’t the theme font.

I’m using Firefox, and the initial problem was that my Gdocs Ubuntu font wasn’t recognized by WP. When I use Arial or Trebuchet, it stays that way instead of converting to a tiny Times font as Ubuntu did. However, unlike your examples, these fonts and the sizes I used didn’t convert to my theme defaults.

So my remaining question is just this:

How can I paste formatted text and have it converted to my theme font and sizing?

  • Unknown's avatar

@jackiedana I am using MS Word 2013 version 15.0.4569.1508. I access WordPress from Firefox version 28.0 on a Windows 8.1 PC.

I have an older version of Word on a PC at work. I will try pasting with that one tomorrow.

  • Unknown's avatar

@jackiedana — I went to your test blog, opened the Word document, did a select all and copy (cntrl-c). I created a new blog post and did a paste (cntrl-v) into the editor. All the formatting was lost.

  • Unknown's avatar

@mcclaughry — I tried your web page workaround and although it preserved my line breaks, I lost the bold and italics. So, close, but no cigar.

  • Unknown's avatar

It looks like almost all the issues being reported in the Visual Editor are related to Firefox. Could you both try these in Chrome (or even IE) and let me know if that resolves things for you?

  • Unknown's avatar

Also, @zypczyk, could you link me to a post where you’ve run into this issue, or could you create a test post and mark it private so I can see what you’re seeing?

  • Unknown's avatar

Things are a little better this morning – my Ubuntu text no longer converts to Times – but not to the theme font/size either.

Here’s a post with samples. The first paragraph I typed directly into Vis Editor and the rest is pasted (and labeled) from Gdocs in Arial 10 and 12:

    http://edsinfo.wordpress.com/2014/03/27/3436/

I’m sorry I don’t have time to check Chrome – gotta run now. If you still want a Chrome sample, let me know and I’ll do it tomorrow.

Thanks a bunch for your help!
