Edits to published posts showing up as comments in dashboard
-
I seem to be having an issue with post edits showing up as comments in my dashboard. While I believed changing a setting ( as posted on the support forum ) would have fixed the issue apparently it hasn’t or I just haven’t fully understood how post edits and comments supposed to work. The setting I changed was in Settings > Writing > checked WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically. The setting is still active and has not changed.
Unfortunately, I can’t restore the real comments made by others as I emptied the “trash” for comments not realizing the comments had been removed from the posts. Fortunately, my blog is still new and there was only one comment.
Is there a way to stop post edits from showing up in the dashboard comments section on a free blog?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Changing that setting should not cause problems. It should not remove comments from posts. What does it say on the dashboard Settings->Discussion page?
Post edits should not show up as comments.

I didn’t think post edits should show up as comments. lol It didn’t remove comments from posts, -I- did without realizing I was doing so. An accident.
I assume you mean the default article settings in Settings > Discussions. All three are checked.

What the above (Settings > Discussions) has to do with post edits showing up in Comments on the Dashboard, I haven’t got a clue. The issue is not with comments, it’s with edited posts showing up in the listing for Comments in the Dashboard.

Hi, @meenasfhyzics: you are in the wrong forum.
This forum is for blogs/sites hosted by WordPress.comWordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and different http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
And you should ask in the WordPress.org forum.

Just my luck… I ask for help with an issue and get spammed for a ” business course” I have absolutely no use or need of. Not to mention that person’s WordPress blog is spam itself. *sighs*
If someone has a solution to the edited posts showing up in the dashboard comments listing I would greatly appreciate the assistance. Is it possible this is an issue with the theme (my Life) I am using or could this be a server side glitch/issue?
If it helps, it does not happen every time I edit a post. It seems to only happen when I edit a post that is about 24 hours old or older. I don’t change dates or anything like that, nor do I use the beep beep boop (?). I do all of my work in the Dashboard.

Edited post appear in the section “Your Stuff” on the dashboard page, mixed in with incoming comments. comments you made, new posts, etc. That’s normal behavior for a WordPress.com website.

The behavior is theme independent, and it’s not a glitch.

Correction:
Links to recently updated posts appear in the section “Your Stuff”on the dashboard page…

@musicdoc1 I don’t have a “Your Stuff” section. There is nothing on my Dashboard that shows all those things you mentioned in one listing.
My dashboard has:
Dashboard
Store
Posts
Media
Links
Comments
Feedback
Appearance
Users
Tools
SettingsNone of the submenus for the above have anything even remotely resembling “My/Your Stuff”.
I don’t understand why no one seems to get that I am talking about edited posts showing up in theComments listing when I click on the menu item Comments in admin aka dashboard. Why would it be expected behavior to have a post that I edit show as being commented on when it has not been commented on by me or anyone else? I edited the post I did not comment on it.
Yes, I am starting to get a little frustrated as I have not been able to move forward with my work for two days now.

Here is the dashboard page I was referring to https://wolfeyessims4.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php. Perhaps yours looks different than mine does.
When you click on the comments link in the dashboard you should go to https://wolfeyessims4.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php. Is that the page where you’re finding edited posts?

Both of the above links are correct. You won’t be seeing anything listed on the edit-comments section because I accidentally deleted everything that was showing there.
If it is expected behavior for edited posts to show up on the edit-comments section then so be it. I’ll just have to be careful to remove only those that are actually posts that I edited and not comments made by others.
Frankly, IMHO, if that is expected behavior, it’s a kind of mickey mouse way of doing things. It just doesn’t make sense to me to have posts I edit show up on a comments listing as if my edit were waiting for my approval, since I am the one and only admin of the site. :o)

No. That is not expected behavior. Haven’t seen it happen in 6 and a half years of using WordPress.com. I previously thought you might be referring to the “Your Stuff” section, a section which you might not have activated, in the Screen Options.
I will add a “modlook” tag to the topic to call for Staff attention. Hopefully, one of them will provide an explanation and a solution to your issue.

I hadn’t noticed that somebody already added the “modlook” tag.
I did it. Threre is a spammer here.

Editing a post does not show up in comments and is not an expected behavior.
What may be happening here is that re-publishing a post can very well recreate a Pingback if it contains a link to another post on your site. A pingback would be expected to show up in your comments as waiting for approval.
If you want to stop self-pings (pingbacks created on your own site) you can follow the steps here:

Thank you for confirming this.

This is precisely what occurred when I edited the post. I did add a link to another post on my site. This also explains why it occurred the first time.
I have bookmarked the link for future reference. The only question I have is this, do I need to approve the pingback or can I just delete those that show up in comments? Unnecessary clutter tends to bug me. In other words, should I treat the pingbacks the same way I treat comments or can they be handled differently?
Thanks for your help Alex. It is greatly appreciated!

Feel free to delete self pingbacks that you don’t want to approve.
