Eligible for Adsense?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

My blog is called http://www.metalpedagogy.com, and I’m trying to put google ads on it using Google AdSense. For some reason, when I type the code in, it won’t work! I’ve tried other suggestions – using plugins in the template files, putting the code in a text widget, etc – but nothing has worked.

Then I saw that I might not be eligible. How do I figure out if my website’s eligible? And also, how do I do this if I AM eligible?!

Thanks for your help in advance – I’m so frustrated with this,
    Geoff.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Here’s what the Support docs have to say about Advertising:

Adsense, Yahoo, Chitika, TextLinkAds and other ads are not allowed on free WordPress.com blogs. If you would like to run ads on your blog, one of these options may work for you:

If you have 25,000+ pageviews/month, you may qualify for AdControl… you can read more here

My wordpress blog isn’t free though, I paid for the .com!

Same rules apply for WordPress.com sites that use domain mapping. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/#important-notes-before-upgrading

Alright, well I guess my only question would be what’s the process for getting ads? Sorry that I’m so hopeless, I’ve been trying to code for hours and just realized I couldn’t be eligible.

What you have is your own domain name mapped to a blog that is physically still hosted at wordpress.COM. That means all the same restrictions and the TOS apply to your blog. It is just that your blog here appears behind your own domain name.

From the domain mapping support document:

    Important Notes Before Upgrading

Same Rules Apply – The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service.

To advertise you would need to self-host a wordpress site on a third-party hosting service such as godaddy, bluehost, etc. using the software from wordpress.ORG. Figure an average cost of $10 to $25 per month, all things considered.

Also, most people I know doing advertising barely cover their hosting costs, and some don’t even do that. You have to have the right content that brings in the type of people that click on ads, and you have to get a good number of hits per month. Also, people are getting tired of looking at ads and as of today, the Adblock Plus add-on for Firefox has been downloaded just short of 130 million times.

G’day Jennifer, you beat me to it.

On the link I gave above to the Advertising Support Doc there is a contact form. If you qualify with 25,000+ pageviews/month, then use that form to contact them. Good luck.

One news site people I know, they have about 15,000 very loyal viewers and somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000 page views a month and the last time I checked they still could not pay for ONE full time person. And they have a nice ad stream with local companies

Yes, Ad¢ents is certainly marketed well, but highly overrated as far as income goes.

  • Unknown's avatar

Do you guys have any other suggestions in terms of income, then, when it comes to these websites? Do you think that selling banner space to individual companies is worth doing once a certain number of hits / day has been reached?

    @thenashvillain
If you have any expectation os making more than pocket change from a free hosted WordPress.com blog that has the required number of page views and also has suitable content and is accepted into the AdControl Program forget them. You will be fortunate if you make $5.00 per month.

Also read this just so you are clear that any blogger initiated advertising on a free hosted WordPress.com will get your blog suspended. Your questions are better directed to WordPress.ORG bloggers than they are to us here at WordPress.COM.

@thenashvillain- I’m going to refer you to my comment above and encourage you to read the entire support doc (including the links therein) I pointed to so that you understand what we can and cannot do here on WordPress.com in terms of advertising.

If being able to run ads on your blog is a dealbreaker for you, then as timethief recommended, you will want to look at self-hosting your site someplace other than WordPress.com. Information about that is also available in the Advertising Support doc.

    Best wishes and good luck.
