Em Dash

    I hope this is an easy question. I can’t make an em dash in WordPress, I thought it was supposed to automatically make one when I put two dashes together, but that doesn’t seem to be working.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    In the html editor, type either of the following (withouth the spaces:
    & mdash ;
    & #8212 ;

    Or, on a Mac, hold down the option and shift keys and press the dash key

    There must be something similar on other computers, but I don’t know it…

    Thank you I appreciate the help. I’m not much with html… It still doesn’t seem to be working…

    Maybe I’ll just find it in an article and cut and paste it. That will be probably be how I’ll have to go (assuming that works), because I’m an idiot, lol…

    Ooo. Don’t cut and paste some pre-formatted text. That will cause you no end of trouble!
    I’m not a bit familiar with non-Mac computers, and there must be a keyboard short-cut to make an em dash!!!

    If you aren’t html eager, then put a bunch of “XXXXXXXXXX” where you want the em dash, take a courage pill, and look in the html editor for the “XXXXXXXXXX”

    Then replace the X-s with the code I gave you. (just eliminate the spaces between & and mdash and between mdash and ;) Then, QUICK! go back to the visual editor. After that you will be able to highlight the — and copy paste it where you want.

    Or someone who has a non-Mac will tell you a keyboard shortcut…

    Ah it took me all this time to figure out, lol. What happens is before you publish the dashes show up as separate, but when you publish the two become an em dash… So WordPress does seem to be set up to automatically make the em dash.

    all’s well—that’s good…
    ≥^!^≤

    I’m having a different problem with the em dash. Once I publish, my double hyphens turn into a single hyphen instead of an em dash. Does anyone have any ideas on this, or have the same problem?

    To be honest, I have not had the experience of making — (dash dash) appear as an em dash as the OP claims.
    Nor did I can I reproduce it with his theme. (nor in others)
    But apparently he was satisfied. !!??
    I only get what you describe. double hyphens turn into a single hyphen…

    As I said above,
    To make an em dash, you really do have to type:
    & mdash ;
    & #8212 ;
    (remove the spaces)

    Or, on a Mac, hold down the option and shift keys and press the dash key

    There must be something similar on other computers, but I don’t know it…

    Oh, you must switch to the html editor to type in
    & mdash ;
    or
    & #8212 ;

    The key stroke method can be done in the visual editor.

    Thank you! I will try that.
