I need to change my wordpress email as I am no longer working at the email address I used. I have created this site, but want to delete it and use the email associated with it as my work email is no longer valid. If I delete this, it says i cannot use the amail associated with it for 30 days. I want to be sure I can use it after that, and I can then change my work one this my gmail…
make sense? hahaha -
Hi there!
When you close your account, the email address gets blocked for 30 days, in case you changed your mind. After that time, the account is purged and the email address removed from our database, so you can use it again with another account.
You do not need to wait, though. You can change the email address on the account you don’t want to use, which will free the desired address to be used with the correct account. I hope that helps :)

So to be clear, the blog that has the incorrect email is the one I want to keep and just change to my gmail email. That site wont load my drafts or anything as I think it knows the email is no longer valid. The one I want to cancel has my gmail associated with it hence I can’t use it for my original blog.
That being said, I did what you said about not waiting. I changed the blog email (the one I”m not using) to a different email (i don’t even use it anymore), and it saved and worked. Then i tried to use the gmail for my blog above, but it still says email in use. Does this take time to update records so I can use the gmail email eventually…like 24 hrs?

Hi, what is the gmail account that you are looking to use? Can you please share it here? (the forum software will block it from public view, but staff will be able to see it)

I can confirm that email address is in use on another account. You can reset your password so you can access that account by entering it here: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
Once you have gained access to that account, you can set the email address to be something else instead. This will “free up” the gmail address you want to use with your other account.

I’m slightly confused now. When I click on that link, what email am I using to reset a password? and i want to use the gmail account i mentioned on my blog jst4lafs. I’ll try that now. i’ll let you know what happens. is their a waiting period? Thank you again…

Hello, ok so I changed the blog that has nothing in it to a fictitious email, which should have freed up the email I wanted to used in my jst4lafs blog. When I try to change it, it says this… “that email address is already being used” EVENTHOUGH i was able to change it. Does this take time to have it removed from the system???

The email address you list in the post above is still being used by a WordPress.com account. So it looks like the change was not successful. That would explain why the system will not allow you to update your current account to use that address.
Just to be clear, are you following all of the instructions here:

so yes, i am not sure what is happening. I have changed the email as indicated. I did have to use a fictitious email in the old blog to be able to update it as I don’t have any other emails to use… It did say confirmed change… (I don’t have any other emails to use). I”m going to try again… but again, is that email (the one I want) available immeidately or does it take 24 hrs. to use (in my real blog).. failing this is there someone that can reach out via phone chat? would really like to get this resolved. I”m kicking myself now not changing this sooner before my work email was deACTIVATED.. :(

and yes, i did follow the rules. It didn’t seem to be that difficult (as per video), but i’m just curious if there is a waiting time. and one more thing, the ficticious email that I used. There isn’t anything that they send to THAT email to confirm is it, because if this is the case, I would never see that given it’s just fake..

There wouldn’t be a waiting time, the confirmation is nearly instant.

Hello, so NO! :( I went into the blog that had my email I want to use, and changed it and saved (changed it to some fake email). It said changes were saved. I then received an email stating it was changed and to ignore if this was ok. I ignored as I wnated this to happen.
Then, went into my jst4lafs blog, via the email that no longer works from my work email, and tried to change it to the email I want to use (which was just changed from above), and it said that email is being used….. SO THERE YOU HAVE IT!, I’m at a loss. There must be a waiting time as I have done everything. I know it’s not difficult…but it’s not liking my changes AND NOT LETTING me grab the new email… always says it’s in use eventhough i changed it and used a new one which should “free up the ” one I want…. helppppp

You cannot change the other account to a fake email, because the email change will only take effect once you confirm it via an email we send to the new address. If the new address you gave is fake, it means you cannot receive the confirmation email, which means you cannot complete the email change.
You will need to change the other account to a real email address in order to confirm the change. This is how our system is designed – we cannot allow an email change unless we’re sure you’re able to receive emails from us at that address, so it’s completely impossible to use a fake email address with a WordPress.com account.
As you’re using Gmail, you can just use the built-in alias feature of that service.
Currently your account is using example at gmail.com. Change that to example+oldaccount at gmail.com. Gmail sees those as the same address, while our system sees it as different, so that will allow you to receive the confirmation email and complete the change, and that in turn will free up your example at gmail.com address for use with another account.

Hello, ok so what i did was what you asked. I used (email visible only to moderators and staff) Then it seem to have taken it, but It says that there is a pending confirmation. I then went to my g-mail and all i get is an email saying, “you have requested a change in emails. Please ignore if this is true. ” No where does it say to click here for confirmation etc. etc. Not sure what i’m doing wrong… and definately not sure if the email that I created above will work and would i get it on my one and only gmail account??
Please advise.

Hello, is there someone that can perhaps call me directly? i am still at a loss of how to fix this issue. as per above, I have done everything required…but my jst4lafs blog will not take the email that I want to use. It STILL says it is in use. to clarify, I did what was asked of me for the gmail email (creating one with the @gmail.com at the end…not really sure where i would go to verify that one as it’s not my normal gmail email… any help or other suggestions would be appreciated.

You’re going to need a third email address that you have access to in order to facilitate this change, and making up a Gmail address won’t work for that reason.
I see you tried to use one earlier, but you used the wrong character. Gmail aliases use a + not a -.
Instead of using:
yourrealemail (at) gmail (dot) comUse this:
yourrealemail+otheraccount (at) gmail (dot) comYou can make that +1, +whatever, +doesnotmatter … whatever letters or numbers make the most sense to you. Gmail will ignore the plus sign and anything after it. But we won’t, so it’s in effect a second email account that delivers to the same address.
Change the account with the Gmail address you want to that Gmail alias. Once confirmed that will free-up the Gmail address you want to use on the account you want.

I ‘ll be honest and say that I used the “-” because the old email was v-lesw but now you made it all make much more sense…… I am happy to report that it now has been changed. I can now write a blog knowing that people can reply and I will see it. Goodbye old email.
