Email alerts in group blogs

  I run a blog for my family and we all post entries and comments to it. When any of us adds a post or comments on any post I’d like the rest of us to be alerted by email. At the moment, we only get alerts by email when someone comments on our own posts. (I have a sneaky feeling that it used to work differently when I first set the blog up. Please let me know if there is a way of configuring this that I haven’t found yet.)

  There are various options to get an email alerts, I discussed few in this post:

  Since you’re running multiple blogs, you can possibly use Yahoo Pipes to combine multiple Comments Feeds into one and then subscribe that one Pipe feed as an email.

  Unfortunately, the feedburner option doesn’t work for my family’s blog as it is not public. I would like to see this as an option within WordPress itself. The target audience will be very basic blog users like my family, who are venturing into new technologies, but still use email as their primary alerting mechanism.

  If the blog is private there is no remote alert system, for privacy reasons. You could just ask the participants to email the others, and since it’s private presumably either they have one another’s email addresses or you can set them in a DRAFT post which everyone can read. I would recommend not publishing the post, only saving it as a draft; the privacy for private blogs is very, very good, but this will add another layer of protection.

  I notice that feedblitz (http://www.feedblitz.com/) now provides a way of providing email alerts for a private blog but I’m hesitant to use this because I don’t like the idea of passing private information or family email addresses to a third party.

  I still think it would be a good idea to extend the current email alert service that wordpress provides when someone else comments on a blog entry with an option to be messaged when a new post is added by someone else.

  I think that feature is coming soon and it is certainly long over due.
