Email comment notifications not linking through to the post or the comment.

  • Unknown's avatar

For some days now, when I get an email notification of a comment on one of my blog posts and click ‘View Comment’, it doesn’t work. All I get is a spinning connection in a new tab, but no connection to the post or the particular comment. This is from Gmail, which I previously had no issues with. Can anyone suggest anything? I have had to resort to using the Notifications Bar, which does not list every comment before running out of space.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out! I understand you’re having trouble with the “View Comment” link from your email notifications not working as expected. Let’s try a few things to resolve this issue:

    1. Clear Browser Cache: Sometimes, old cache files can cause issues. Clearing your cache and trying the link again might help.
    2. Check Browser Extensions: Certain extensions (like ad blockers) can sometimes interfere with how links work. Try disabling your extensions and testing the link.
    3. Try a Different Browser: To rule out browser-specific issues, try accessing the link in a different browser to see if the problem persists.
    4. Open in Incognito Mode: Incognito mode disables most extensions and uses a fresh browsing session, so it’s another way to see if the issue is specific to your browser setup.

If the problem continues, feel free to let me know, and we’ll explore other options. You can also keep using the Notifications Bar for comment management in the meantime.

Hello. I had already done all of the above before contacting the forum. I am still experiencing numerous issues daily.

Email notifications still not linking to the posts.

WordPress Admin page not loading from shortcut.

Notifcations Bar comments not linking to posts or comments when I reply.

Today my blog admin page will not load at all. I tried to go to my own site on a Google search, scroll down and click admin. That has not worked yet this morning, so I only have access to my blog via the notifications bar.

I pay for Premium, but seem to have been frozen out of my blog on a regular basis by the constant glitches. I am not alone, as other bloggers report sites failing to load, taking too long to load, and comments failing to appear. Something needs to be done, a proper investigation of why this is happening now, and why glitches seem to happen on a weekly basis. Thank you.

  • Hello Pete,

Thank you for your patience as we work through this issue together. I understand how frustrating it must be, especially with the ongoing problems accessing your site and comments.

Let’s try a few more advanced troubleshooting steps to see if we can improve the situation while we investigate on our end:

    1. Clear Cookies and Site Data: In addition to clearing your cache, cookies and site data for WordPress.com might help resolve issues with loading the admin page or comment notifications.
      • In Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data > See all site data and permissions > Search for “WordPress.com” and remove related cookies.
      • In Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Manage Data > Search for “WordPress.com” and remove related data.
    2. Check Browser Extensions: Some extensions (like ad blockers or privacy tools) can interfere with page functionality. Try disabling them temporarily or using a browser with no extensions (like Incognito Mode).
    3. Use a Different Network: If you’re accessing your site from the same network (e.g., home Wi-Fi), try switching to another network (e.g., mobile data or a different Wi-Fi connection) to see if it resolves the issue. Sometimes, network-specific issues can cause loading problems.
    4. Test on Another Device: If you haven’t already, try accessing your site from a different device. This helps to isolate whether the issue is device-specific or related to your account/site.
    5. Browser Console Logs: If you’re comfortable with more advanced troubleshooting, open your browser’s developer tools (usually by right-clicking on the page and selecting “Inspect” or pressing F12) and go to the “Console” tab. If errors or comments appear while trying to load the WordPress Admin page, you can share them with us for further investigation.

Please try these steps and let me know if they make any difference. I understand this may be frustrating, but these steps will help narrow down the issue. I’ll also be following up with our technical team to see if we can identify any server-side causes for these glitches.

Thank you again for your patience, and please keep me updated. We’re here to help you every step of the way.

Thanks for your reply. I have to state from the outset that I am 72 years old, and my computer/technical skills are negligible. It is as much as I can do to manage to blog, send emails, and follow basic instructions. That’s why I rely on paying WordPress every year, so that I don’t have to cope with glitches, or managing my own computer to be able to blog. I also still use the Classic Editor, as I detest the Block Editor.

Cookies and site data have been cleared. I finally managed to get to my Admin Page and post something, but it continues to glitch on the comment notifications.

I do not have any extensions, or ad-blockers.

My Internet network is accessed via a modern SSD PC directly connected (no wi-fi) and it is fibre optic, very fast broadband that has no issues with anything. (Other than WordPress, apparently)

Other devices. I have WordPress on my tablet, but do not use that for blogging, as the screen is too small and dependent on wi-fi. I need a large monitor to blog comfortably. So far, the blog link on my tablet does work, BUT it does NOT allow me to use email notifications to view comments.

I am not comfortable with advanced trouble shooting. As I stated above, my computer skills are minimal, and I also do not see why I should do that when I am a customer being plagued by glitches that originate from your constant changes and updates that are not notified. (Example, the recent change to The Reader by using a spectacles logo that you told nobody about.)

I changed from Firefox to Chrome when I was informed that WordPress no longer supported Firefox in the UK. I have tried logging in on Brave and Duck Duck Go, but that just resulted in a raft of two-step authentications that gave me a stress headache and solved nothing.

In all honesty, if you no longer want ‘Hobby Bloggers’ paying to be on your platform, and you are only interested in Business Plans and associated customers, I wish you would just tell us that and we can all call it a day. After 12 years of blogging on WordPress, I am at the end of my thether with the comepletely unnnecessary changes and weekly glitches. And I know I am not alone, as I have almost 9,000 followers who feel much the same as I do.

I am away from the computer next week for my annual summer holiday, and I am counting on WordPress to investigate this in my absence, and not asking me to do the job that I pay WP to do.

    Thank you, Pete.

  • Hi Pete,

Thank you so much for your detailed response, and I completely understand how frustrating this situation has been for you. I truly appreciate your long-term commitment to WordPress and your willingness to work through these challenges despite everything.

You’ve already done a lot of the key troubleshooting steps, and that’s a great start! While we continue to investigate on our end, here are a couple of things you can try to further streamline your blogging experience:

    1. Comment Notifications: It’s fantastic that you’ve been able to work through some issues using the Notifications Bar. You could also try using the WordPress.com app on your desktop or tablet, which can offer a smoother experience with notifications and site management.
    2. Accessing Your Admin Page: If glitches continue, don’t hesitate to use the Classic Editor through your WordPress Admin or the Classic Editor plugin, which may provide a more familiar experience, especially as you prefer to avoid the Block Editor.

I know you’ve been handling things well despite the obstacles, and your 12 years of blogging experience are proof of that! While these hiccups are frustrating, it’s clear that you’ve already mastered a lot of key skills, and I’m confident that you’ll navigate through these as well.

If you need any guidance or additional tools to make your experience smoother, you’ve got the ability to manage this, and we’re here to support you along the way. You’re doing great, and I’m sure with a little more tweaking, you’ll be back to smooth sailing.

Enjoy your holiday, Pete, and we’ll be here if you need anything in the future!

I still have no idea why my email notifications do not link to the posts or comments, and it sounds to me as if you are blaming me for these issues somehow. I should not have to rely on the notifications bar for everything. You have also not addressed the slow loading of my blog, and the failure to load the Admin Page every time. I have to say that it appears to me that you have no idea what has gone wrong, and instead have chosen to patronise me about any ‘skills I may have mastered’ and expect me to either keep dealing with the glitches or just stop complaining.

    I am very disappointed.

It sounds like there may be a browser or cache issue. Try clearing your browser’s cache or using a different browser to see if the problem persists. You could also check if there are any updates available for your browser. If the issue is specific to Gmail, you might want to disable any extensions temporarily to rule out any conflicts.

Many thanks for replying to my question, Jack, which is much appreciated. I have cleared the cache, and have the latest updated versions of Gmail and Google Chrome. I tried other browsers, but that made no difference. I will continue to use workarounds like the notifications bar for now, though since I logged on this morning, the Gmail notifications have resumed linking to the posts. I hope that continues.

    Best wishes, Pete.

  • Hello Pete,

I’m glad the Gmail notifications have resumed linking to the posts. It’s great that you’ve cleared the cache and ensured you have the latest Gmail and Google Chrome versions.

It sounds like you’re managing the situation well with the workarounds, but I understand it’s not ideal. If you continue to experience any issues or if you need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

    Best wishes!
