Email, custom DNS and transfer of domain sdaction.org

Do I need two MX entries plus a TXT and a CNAME and an A record, since I have remapped our domain sdaction.org to wordpress.com (successfully changing the nameservers)? More generally, do I need to duplicate your Custom DNS example exactly, with the <pref> attributes and so forth?

Yes, I have spent hours searching Support and Forums. Our registrar and previous web host sent this email: “your ‘Mail’ record should point to IP address 207.210.108.146 and the MX record should point to mail.sdaction.org.” They said nothing about any other records. We get our email through Fast Mail.
In the meantime, email seems to be coming through, although sporadically, with at least one msg missing entirely. Since it is working mostly, should I wait; is something happening automatically? I hate having to bother you with something that must be routine, but I’m stumped.

Okay, I have just now tried entering the following in the Custom DNS Records form:
    CNAME autodiscover EXCHANGE.SDACTION.ORG.
    MX 10 MAIL.SDACTION.ORG.
    TXT v=spf1 include:mail.sdaction.org ~all
    A webmail 207.210.108.146
    SRV _xmpp-client._tcp 10 10 5269 sdaction.org.

Outgoing mail works, but not incoming. This has been true all along.

Finally resolved. Here’s the quick answer to my short question above on entering DNS Custom Records. We needed only MX records, not A, CNAME or other info. Proper configuration does require an MX record for primary email server and also for a backup email server. Preference should be set for 10 for primary and 20 for backup in that order (unless you’re an email guru for a big shop and know better). (The 10 and 20 in the WP example are the prefs).

The longer back story: our former web host gave us instructions for the DNS email records as if they were our email provider, but they never were. They should have known that, I believe. The fault on our side was not enough internal communication to sort out which of our providers were providing which Internet services.

So what we are doing now might be helpful to other small shops with limited IT experience: we are making a chart (spreadsheet, etc.) listing the types of network services we use, account name, logon and password to both the account and the service (if different, e.g. FTP), contact info they use for us, how we contact them, billing info, server configurations plus pointer to folder of past communications and trouble tickets, etc. Then make sure that chart can be found by anyone who needs it, onsite and off. Hope this helps someone minimize the frustration.

  • Thanks for the info, glad to hear you got it all resolved. Sorry for the trouble and the delay in a response here. Let me know if you have any other questions.
