email field visible but anonymous comments enabled

Is there a way to disable the email field if anonymous comments are permitted? I have anonymous comments enabled, but think the email field — which appears required to those not familiar with wordpress — will quash comments.

If there’s not a way to disable the email field, is there a way to add text explaining people can ignore it?

    Thanks in advance.

there isn’t an anonymous comments feature here. but many anonymous commenters can pass the email loop by putting in a fake email. the savvy ones would know. ;)

If anonymous comments are not possible, what is that option doing on the Dashboard → Options → Discussion page? It says there “Before a comment appears: ☑ Comment author must fill out name and e-mail” and allows you to turn it off. That suggests to me that anonymous comments are possible..

Actually, there is an anonymous comments feature. In options > discussion I unchecked all three boxes in the “Before a comment appears” section. If someone posts a comment but leaves the name and email fields blank, their comment appears as “anonymous.”

Edit: simultaneous posting. Unchecking the “Comment author must fill out name and e-mail” allows anonymous comments.

humboldtherald, that option is always avaliable, can’t hide by not forcing fill it. Hiding it is posible if you buy de Custom CSS upgrade, but i’m not sure if it’s against ToS.

sulz, I guess he is talking about the “Comment author must fill out name and e-mail” option.

Thanks, Jaroche. I figured there wasn’t a way to hide it but wanted to ask just in case. For now, I’ve added a page to explain the name and email fields can be left blank.

ah, something new to learn today. didn’t know unchecking that column means people can leave anonymous comments…

I get anonymous comments all the time, I think. Just don’t fill in a name or email or website link and pass it through.

With the CSS upgrade, that would be the only way and even then, since it’s probably the same div, it may not work.

I agree with the poster. I raised the issue a long while back on the wp.org trac and was pretty much shouted down. At teh very least a Field Required mark or something like that would be nice.

I have the CSS upgrade. Maybe there’s a way to add text near the comment box.

    Thanks everyone for your input.
