email follower activation problem

  • Unknown's avatar

An individual who is trying to follow the blog has multiple times added their email to the follow field and submitted but has not received the wordpress activation email in her inbox or spam/junk email folders. I have just added her email address to the follow field and received the screen message, thanking me for following the blog and telling me to watch for the confirm email. When I asked her if she received it she said she had not. I sent her the link to the the “if you did not receive the confirm email reactivation page” ….could there be some conflict that is causing this problem for her? She does have her own blogs on wordpress, could that be causing a problem for her following this blog? Or could it be email settings in email software?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

when i used the reactivation email page…i got this message “We were unable to fetch your activation record. Are you sure you specified the email address you signed up with?” I just put the email address in, but it does not seem able to take it?

Can you tell me the email address of the person trying to follow the http://flyfins.org/ blog?

Thank you. I searched for WordPress.com accounts using that email and found there is not WordPress.com account setup using that address. This means she is either using a self-hosted WordPress.org site setup elsewhere or that is not the correct spelling of her email address.

I also tested the email subscription form which can be found at the bottom right of the http://flyfins.org/ page when logged out. After I entered my test gmail address into that form, I received an email confirmation subscription shortly thereafter with the subject “Confirm your subscription for Fairfield YMCA Swim Team”, so I believe that form is working as expected. Do you know if that is the same form that she was using to try to follow http://flyfins.org/ ?

As a first troubleshooting step, would you mind double checking that you have spelled the email address exactly correctly for me?

I will try to cover some of your earlier questions quickly here too:

I sent her the link to the the “if you did not receive the confirm email reactivation page”

That form is for account activation and will not work for email confirmations, which are separate.

She does have her own blogs on wordpress, could that be causing a problem for her following this blog?

No, anyone should be able to follow a WordPress.com regardless of their own WordPress site setup(s).

Or could it be email settings in email software?

This is a possibility. However, it’s very hard to tell that from our side and it seems to be to be unlikely for a gmail account such as the one you mentioned would have a problem related to email settings but it very well could be a problem in an email client. Your advice to check spam/junk email folders should really be sufficient to rule this out in this case.

As a next step, let’s double and triple check the email. A good way to do that would be to ask her to email you directly (if you don’t already have a message from her in your inbox) and copy and paste the email address from that message so there is no chance of making a typo when checking it.

I really appreciate your help! I hope the following isn’t too tedious, but I’m trying have you see what I’m seeing. Below are links to the close ups of the screen messages received when the follow is entered. #1 is the follow widget plus the default follow (there are 2 follows on the page), I have copy pasted the email address in both fields (I believe the email owner has done this several times as well):Image 1
#2 is the thank you, that says”You’ll get an email with a link to confirm your sub. If you don’t get it, please contact us”:https://fairfieldflyfins.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/flyfinty.gif
#3 When you link to the contact us page it offers the activation email field, but I believe your saying this is not for the email follows? So I’m not sure why wordpress send us here? https://fairfieldflyfins.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/supportcontactpage.gif
The email owner has checked her spam/junk folders and she does not see the confirm email. I have sent her gmail specific client troubleshooting that wordpress offers to see if that would help.
Is there anything else we can try?

Correct. It displays that form by default for logged out views because that is a common need even though it doesn’t fit in this case. The paragraph above the form says:

If you’ve signed up for an account but haven’t gotten an activation email

And the case here is not about signing up for an account.

Is there anything else we can try?

Yes. Did you double check the spelling of the email address as I suggested earlier?

I also sent an email directly to (email visible only to moderators and staff) to see if I can get a reply and check it from my side.

You might also try sending an invite from here:

The email owner received your email as she cc’d me on her response to you. Also, I just sent an invite (from the link above) from the admin page….I am waiting to hear back whether she received it and if it works. Will there be a confirmation email she needs to accept when the invite goes in this manner?

Thank you very much for all your help, it is greatly appreciated! :)

It looks like the invite worked based on what I can see in the email logs. When I checked email logs this morning, I can see a record for an invite sent from our system was successfully sent on Nov 4 03:42:58 UTC with the subject line, “fairfieldflyfins invited you to follow Fairfield YMCA Swim Team.” The person you invited should check for that message now.

Some additional notes: I did test this with my own test gmail account and the email went through. The only reason I can think of so far for why that type of message is not getting sent to the person trying to follow in your case is that they checked the option to block WordPress.com at some point in the past: https://cloudup.com/cUjj7Ncj-WC I emailed her to ask if she wouldn’t mind checking that setting.

It looks like she’s up an running…Thanks again for all your help!!

You’re welcome! I’d like to look into this further if another case comes up so I can find out more about why the first form might have been working for one email address but not for another.
