email followers

I added an email address for a new follower (people category) then realized the address was wrong. I added the new address but there is still no indication that anything has been added (removed) from the list. Why is my new follower not mentioned? Thanks for your help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • HI there,

An email follower will not appear on your followers list until that person has confirmed the subscription via the link we email to them.

If you provide the email address I can check on that for you. Post the email address on its own line, and it will be hidden from public view automatically.

    Thanks, that sounds reasonable!

    the faulty email address is
(email visible only to moderators and staff)

    the good email address is:
(email visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Okay, I can see a pending subscription for the faulty email address. If that address doesn’t actually exist, then obviously it won’t be possible to confirm.

I can also see the correct email address attempted to follow, but the account connected to that email address is currently blocking us from sending any subscription emails. The account owner will need to first unblock us from their account settings before they’ll be able to subscribe via email:

Everything turned out fine and the email subscription was confirmed (with the right address). :)

  • That’s great! Let us know if we can help you with anything else!

    Hello again!

I received the first confirmation twice and the person is confirmed as an email subscriber. When I invited a second person, I was informed (twice) that I was being

      followed

on WordPress (but the person does not have an account!).

Both new email followers are in the “follower” list (wrong) and only the first is mentioned on the email one. Could you sort this out? Thanks!

  • If someone is appearing in the Followers list they have a WordPress.com account connected to the email address they used to follow you. The fact that they are listed there with a username proves they have a WordPress.com account. If you click on that username you’ll even see their WordPress.com site.

I’m not sure why the hotmail address will be showing as a non-WordPress.com follower on your site. It’s possible they chose to accept the subscription without logging into their WordPress.com account. If that’s the case, that’s their decision. We cannot make changes to the way they are subscribed without their consent, so if this isn’t how they want it to be, they will need to contact us for help fixing it. I do see their username listed under your WordPress.com followers as well, though.

Why they are appearing in the Follower list is the question at hand. They should appear in the ’email followers’ list.

I have 3 followers by email.

The first in 2017 generated a confirmation reading:

“… just started following you at http://alpineanomalous.wordpress.com. They will receive an email every time you publish a post. Congratulations.”

The 2 latest email followers generated the same confirmation BUT had this extra paragraph:

“You might want to go see what they’re up to! Perhaps you will like their blog as much as they liked yours!”

which is unapplicable (as they don’t have a blog!)

They are appearing in the Follower list because the email address they used to follow your site is connected to a WordPress.com account.

I have 3 followers by email.

I only see two – chas and david. What is the third one you see?

That is the email that goes out for WordPress.com followers, not email-only followers, and the most recent WordPress.com follower on your site, johnwantling, does have a site in their account, and connected to their username that’s listed under People ->Followers in the dashboard: http://johnwantling.wordpress.com/

To be completely clear, a WordPress.com user can subscribe via email as well, but they won’t appear under your email followers if they subscribed to email notifications while logged into their WordPress.com account.

I was unaware that johnwantling had an account. Is this new or has it been around for some time?

There should be 3 email followers: chas, david and john. The entry for david appears in two places (followers + email followers), the entry for john, only in followers, the entry for chas, only in email followers.

I can’t give you information about when another account was created :) If you are in contact with johnwantling, can you check whether they subscribed to email notifications while logged into their WordPress.com account? Or whether they were logged out at the time? This could explain why they are not listed in your Email Followers list.

    The Johnwantling account is empty.

I should have 3 email followers (which is now reduced to 2). One of the two is mentioned TWICE (as both a follower and as an email follower).

  • Thanks, I can see one of the followers is indeed listed as following by email and following via their WordPress.com login. This is possible if they signed up to follow by email then also followed the blog while logged in.

If they want to unsubscribe, they can, and if you’d like to remove them as a follower, you may. But it won’t hurt to leave them there as is.
