Email followers: 'notification' vs 'full text'?

  • Unknown's avatar

Probably a silly question but… Is there a way to set things up on my blog so that when someone follows via email, they only get a “notification” (as it’s described in the Settings and Widgets) that there is a new post, rather than getting the entire post within the email that is sent to them?

Because I often edit my posts several times right after the initial Publish click, in order to shift image positions or (yes, LOL) correct typos or wordings, I’d rather have followers just be notified that there is a new post, rather than seeing it in its “first version up” format.

Is there a way to have email followers receive simply a heads-up (“there is a new post at Chatsworth Lady..” with a link) instead of them getting the entire post in their email? To me, that’s what “notification” means, whereas “receive new posts by email” would mean they’d get the full content.

I am a bit confused as to the difference between the Follow widget and the Follow Button widget. I have both on my site but if I only want people to get notifications rather than the full post, should I use only one of them? and if so, which one?

    Thanks! :-)

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You can include your post summary (only the first 55 words) by setting For each article in a feed, show to Summary in your Reading Settings screen at:
    https://chatsworthlady.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

Here is the more information about this field and other reading settings: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/reading-settings/

The Follow button lets logged-in WordPress.com users to follow your blog with a single click.

The Follow Blog Widget enables your readers to sign up to receive your posts via email. The content of the email your followers receive depends on the For each article in a feed, show setting as mentioned above.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

That solved the problem — thank you SOOO much! :-)

Funny but I did notice that Reading Settings option but interpreted “feed” to mean an RSS feed and never connected it with any sort of email subscription, lol

Thanks again and have a great holiday! :-)

  • You are welcome :)

Next time when you are unsure of what a setting does, just google it using a search string like wordpress.com + For each article in a feed, show. The first result will point to a WordPress.com support guide.

    Happy blogging.
