Email forwarding
-
Has the mechanism for setting up email forwarding changed? In the past when I’ve used it, the owner of the destination email would receive an email asking he/she to confirm email forward. All they had to do was click on the link and forwarding was set up. Now there seems to be a further step whereby the owner of the destination email address is asked to log on to WordPress.com. Is it now a requirement that they have a WordPress account?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi cwcc58,

If they are a user on the site, they will be asked to login to WordPress.com. However if they aren’t, it should still be possible to verify the email forwarding without logging in.
Is the forwarding email being used for the account of a site user?
Thanks!

Hi
The email is being forwarded to someone who is not a site user. She gets the email, clicks on the “Confirm email forward” link which throws up another tab on the browser window asking her to log into WordPress.com. I asked her to ignore the link but then nothing happens. If I look on the email forwarding page in the Domain Management section it shows “Resend Verification Email” against the particular email we are trying to forward. Pressing this merely goes through the procedure again with the same result.

Hi cwcc58,
If I look on the email forwarding page in the Domain Management section it shows “Resend Verification Email” against the particular email we are trying to forward.
There is a user account connected to the email address that needs to be verified, which is why they are being asked to login. If they no longer have access to their WordPress.com account, please ask them to get in touch with us here:

Hi
My apologies. When I was trying to find out what was going on I’d left the forwarding address of (email visible only to moderators and staff) to my email address which is why you rightly said there was a WordPress account associated with it.
I have now corrected it to point to the intended address and again the request for confirmation has been sent out. However, when it is received and the recipient clicks on the “Confirm Email Forward” button a new tab is opened inviting her to log on to WordPress.com. She has no recollection of having a WordPress account and when she presses the “forgot my password” button WordPress says there is no account registered with her email as an id.

Hi cwcc58,
She has no recollection of having a WordPress account and when she presses the “forgot my password” button WordPress says there is no account registered with her email as an id.
You’re right — there is no email address associated with the updated email address.
I’ve mentioned this issue to our developers so they can take a closer look at what is happening. In the meantime, please try this workaround:
- Ask the person receiving the email, to forward it to you
- You should then be able to confirm email forwarding by following the instructions
Let me know how you get on.

Hi
the workaround was successful. Many thanks for your help. If your developers find an underlying problem will that be posted on here?

Hi cwcc58,
Just to give you an update — we’ve made some changes which should help anyone without a WordPress.com account verify email forwarding. If you run into any further trouble though, you’re welcome to reply here.
