email forwarding options not showing
-
I have a free account but I cannot find the email forwarding options on my mysite >> manage >> domain page. Nor can I find any of the links in the images used to illustrate what steps I am supposed to take. The page I am taken to is titled ‘Site Domains’ and has only ‘Primary domain’–> [websitename].wordpress.com
Below that is:
‘Transfer lock’ ‘Privacy’ ‘Auto-renew’ ‘Email’
[websitename].wordpress.comWhen I click on the website name, I get a page titled ‘default site domain settings’ with two buttons: ‘Change Site Address’ and ‘Pick a custom domain’
Nowhere do options for setting up email forwarding or even the links to change DNS records to enable the use of an external email service.
Please advise me on this–what am I missing?
-
These options only work with a custom domain name.
https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/Before you add email, make sure you have a custom domain.
They won’t be an option with a .wordpress.com address, sorry to say. Only custom domains can create a
@yourdomain.comtype email. Without that, you’d be trying to use the wordpress.com domain, which is not offered for blog owners. -
But the website says email forwarding is available for free accounts. And only the wordpress.com option was free.
-
Can you please link to where you see that? I have not seen that wording. I have only seen it said that email forwarding is free with custom domains. It does say this-
Custom domain owners on the Free, Personal, and Premium plans can add five email forwards for each domain.

Some very old grandfathered accounts have a domain but not a current plan, which I believe might be the source of the confusion.
-
Yes, that is confusing. Some clarification there would be helpful. I just spent ~ 2 hours looking at help threads and trying to figure out what I was doing wrong and then posting here. Very frustrating.
-
Oh no! The main thing is that you need a custom domain to make an email like
(email visible only to moderators and staff). Since WordPress.com is a big company, you can’t create an email like(email visible only to moderators and staff)for your blog. You might create a free email for your blog at something like Gmail. -
Sorry, do over!
To make an email likename<at>yourdomain.comyou’ll need a yourdomain.com. WordPress.com doesn’t currently enable emails likename<at>wordpress.comfor bloggers. -
Darci, I am speaking to you like you work for wordpress. But maybe you don’t and are just being nice. If so, thank you for the response.
I have another related question…So I upgraded. How long does it take the forwarding function to become operational. I just tried to use it and there seems to be a delay.

Can you see the domain now here to manage?
https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/If so, you should be able to select it and add email options like forwarding. Make sure to confirm the set up with the message sent to the destination email. Test sending to your new email with an address that’s different from the one it forwards to, if you are able.
