Email forwarding setup from GoDaddy to Gamil

My domain name is registered through GoDaddy(GD). I initially setup an email account but was told by GD rep that I needed to change the MX record on WP which I did through the instructions found on WP. This did not work and then I was told that I only needed to setup forwarding so I deleted the email account and setup forwarding. This however did not work either at the time the rep could send an email to the address setup and it would be forwarded but I could not from my ATT email account or Gmail account to myself. I was also told I did not need the CNAME portion to the MX record so I deleted this.
Has anyone run across this problem with GD and Gmail before? This has taken so much time I am thinking I should just try Zoho, any suggestions?
