Email from INTERNET DOMAIN REGISTRATION CORPORATION – is this spam!?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi all,
I have had an email from “Internet Domain Registration Corporation” and I am not sure if it is spam… it says:
As a courtesy to the domain name holder the INTERNET DOMAIN REGISTRATION CORPORATION is hereby notifying you that this is your FINAL NOTICE to submit your renewal registration for: xxxxx.com
Failure to complete your domain name renewal registration by the expiration date may result in CANCELLATION of your domain, therefore making it difficult for your customers to locate your website on the Internet.

I haven’t had any other notices and this email says it is a final notice. They are asking for $3.00.

It says my domain name will expire on the 1st October. However I thought when I signed up to WordPress it was for a year – and if this is the case then it shouldn’t expire until early next year.

The strange thing is that they have my street address on the email.

    Any advice gratefully accepted!

  • Hi there. This appears to be a phishing scam. See this scam warning: https://www.namepros.com/threads/warning-icann-email-scam-for-domain-renewal.832813/ Note especially following statement:

Remember: ICANN will never ask you to pay them for a domain name’s registration or associated fees. They collect these fees from domain registrars, such as GoDaddy.

Your web registrar is WildWestDomains, the registrar used by WordPress.com, so your expiration notice will either come from WordPress.com or from WildWestDomains and you’ll pay them for the renewal.

Additionally, the Whois data for your domain shows it only expires on 15 July 2015. You also appear to have private registration enabled, so the scammers probably got your street address somewhere else, or they scraped the Whois data before you had private registration enabled.

I’ll tag this thread for a staff follow-up in any case to confirm. Please be patient while waiting for their reply, and don’t provide any credit card details to the people who sent that email under any circumstances.

    Hi Viki,

Thanks for the clarification @kokkieh! Yes, please disregard this email. We are your registrars, so all renewal emails will be sent through us. Also, you can check your upgrades/domains by going to Store > My Upgrades in your Dashboard.

I found that the two domains in your account do not expire until April and July of 2015.

Please let me know if you have any questions!
