Email given out when comment left

I’m new the wordpress experience. When moderating comments left on my blog, I noticed that all the users email addresses were visible to me, and was horrified to realise that my email address had been given out without my knowledge when I commented on a different blog.

I have read the privacy policy and nowhere was I warned this would be the case, in fact I felt reassured that my email address would be kept private:

“Automattic discloses potentially personally-identifying and personally-identifying information only to those of its employees, contractors and affiliated organizations that (i) need to know that information in order to process it on Automattic’s behalf or to provide services available at Automattic’s websites, and (ii) that have agreed not to disclose it to others.”

I am pretty darn annoyed that this has happened, as I used my primary email address to sign up which contains enough personal information to track me down in the real world. I had no idea I was disclosing so much information and feel like I didn’t have adequate warning. I have now changed the email address.

    My questions are:
    1. Is there a way of preventing my email address from showing up whenever I leave a comment?
    2. Is there a way of preventing me from seeing my commentators email addresses when they comment on my blog?
    3. If I reply to a comment, does this result in my email being made available to anyone, and if so who?
    4. Can I delete the comment I have already made? (So that if the blog owner has not already saved it in their email or elsewhere, they won’t have access to my email anymore).
    5. Is there any other information about me wordpress is giving out that I should know about?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The blog OWNER is the only one who can see your emails. You can see your commenters’ emails, but they can’t see one anothers’.

    1 Don’t comment, ever
    2 No
3 No, just the blog owner
4 Not unless it’s on your own blog
5 YOU are the one giving out your email.

Tthose who want to keep the email address they registered here with “private” can get another email address and use it when leaving comments on blogs.

raincoaster – thanks for the reply.

5 – point taken, but It’d be nice if wordpress let you know that your email and IP goes to the blog owner with your comment BEFORE you comment though. I would never have signed up with that email if I’d known how it’d be used.

    @newlyresolved
I’m sorry your didn’t understand this in advance. I choose to have email addresses for each of my blogs on yahoo and keep my personal email address only for use by family and close friends. May I suggest that you could do that as well?

When you leave a comment on a blog at WordPress.com, and if you are logged in, your email address is made available to the owner of the blog when they see your comment. This is the same as you see when people comment on your blog.

If you are uncomfortable with that, you must log out of WordPress.com before leaving a comment. Even then you will have to leave an email address but it will be your choice as to what you enter. Some blogs will require you to be logged in to make a comment – in that case, you cannot.
