Email link

  • Unknown's avatar

I have inserted an “email” icon on my following website page that I would like to embed an email link to but can’t seem to figure out how. For now, I have used the HTML from your support page to insert the link you see underneath the image.

    http://thebooklady.ca/contact/

On the same page, I also want to insert a “Newsletter: icon that people can click on and be taken to the sign up for my newsletter (which for your purposes is a blog sign-up). Is this possible?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hello there Karen,

That coding did not paste into your Page editor quite right. Please edit the following code to reflect your email address:

    <img class=”alignnone wp-image-4685 size-full” src=”http://thebookladyca.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/email-button2.gif” alt=”Email button2″ width=”50″ height=”40″ />

Don’t forget to replace “mailto:(email visible only to moderators and staff)” with your own email address before you add it to your Page Editor. Make sure you save it!

You can add an abbreviated contact form to your Contact page to gather information for your newsletter:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/

Or you could use the Follow Blog widget in your sidebar:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/

I hope this helps. Please let us know if you need further assistance. All the best!

Thank you so much for your reply “thatrobyn”.

I can’t seem to get your instructions on the email icon to work. I think I have edited the code as you suggested but cannot figure out where to “replace “mailto:[email redacted]” with my own email address”

That being said, my needs have changed slightly since I posted my original request as I changed my theme yesterday and if I can avoid it, will not be using the Contact Page I currently have inactive as I have managed to move almost all of the info from it into my Primary Sidebar and Footer Columns.

My only outstanding item is that “email” icon or a way to have a live link to email me be visible in the Primary Sidebar.

Top of my wish list is to have my desired “email me” image inserted on top of my Facebook button. If I use an ‘Image” widget to insert it, am I able to add the appropriate code in the “Link URL” for viewers to open up an email to me if clicked on? If not, do you know of another way to achieve this using my “email me” image or as a second option just to have my email address showing as a live link?

Also, thank you for your suggestions on my Newsletter sign-up, I’ve decided to continue to use the Follow Blog widget.

Thanking you in advance for your help!

Hello! I think you made the right choice in moving your contact information to the sidebar. That way it’ll be visible on every page and your readers won’t have to hunt for it.

I have made an adjustment to your Primary Sidebar. Please make certain all is working well with the email link.

Please let me know if you need anything else. Happy blogging :)

Wow…awesome-thank you so much for your kind words and work!

While I am happy to leave that sidebar as it is, if you can help me do either of the following, I think my website would look & function much better:

-either make less vertical space between the 3 items in the Primary Sidebar
-or line the 3 Primary Sidebar widgets up (tightly) in a row horizontally, that way there would be less scrolling when viewed on a mobile device which was my whole reason for doing this website re-design
**the second option would be my choice if it is possible

    Thanks again!!!

Try this: take all the html coding for Facebook and Twitter from their widgets, and paste the code into the Text widget that contains the email link. Give that a go and let me know how it works for you :)

Success and it looks much better, thank you!

I have now been trying to get the Facebook & Twitter icons to open up a new browser window when clicked. I Googled the HTML code for it and came up with this:

    New Browser Window

I’ve been trying to add different portions of the above into the text box after the hyperlinks but can’t quite get them to work.

Can you please offer some more guidance?

    Thank you.

Ooops…I see I inserted a live link in my message, sorry about that.

  • Unknown's avatar

To open a link in a new window, paste the following html code within the a href brackets, right before the/>

    target=”new”

    Good luck!

Oh my, I am having my difficulties with this one–I’ve tried several times (and in a few different ways in case I misunderstood) but I can’t seem to make this happen.

    When I put: target=”new”
where I think it should go and hit SAVE, that new text actually disappears from the edit area in my Text Widget and when you click on the icons on my website, they still go to their destination without opening a new window.

Can you please help some more?

I added the target=”new” code to your Facebook link. You can check it out on the actual site and see how the button now opens a new page.

Then, visit Appearance → Widgets. Take a look to see how/where I added code to your Facebook link. Then see if you can add the same target=new code into your Twitter link.

Let me know how it goes!

    Ahhh…the sweet sigh of success!

Thank you so much for all of your help which was five star all the way!

I will happily mark this topic as resolved and perhaps our paths will cross again, as I know I will be asking for help on a couple of other issues once I have time to delve into them.

    Have a wonderful weekend!
