Email Newsletter
-
I want to start a weekly newsletter for my blog, sent through email. What is the best way to get people to subscribe? Would it be to just get them to email you at an email address saying they want to be included, or is there some feature to use?
Also, for those of you who do have email newsletters for your blogs… what works best with them? any other advice? Thanks!

You can also use a contact page and perhaps name the page Newsletter. You can then take the email addresses from those contacts and create a “group” in your email program. http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/05/13/how-do-i-make-a-contact-form/
If you choose to use the contact page, then make sure and turn comments off for that page, or it will confuse your visitors. You can turn comments off in the area below the text edit box in the write page.

I’ve been thinking about doing somewhat similar thing, and I’ve had the weekly summary of my blog posts under a separate category

I also have the same category as a RSS widget on the front page. However, it is just a matter of deciding whether I want to push these weekly summaries out to visitors on top of what they’re already getting through blog and/or other subscribing options. There are quiet a few options out there available for free, for example, you can create a Google or Yahoogroup, and have your user subscribe, then you push the newsletters out. You can collect emails manually (as suggested above) and BCC the newsletter out. And there are some paid options.
As far as I know, there are no appropriate automated options available for wordpress.com blogs to either create a summary/newsletter with ease, you have manually work on them.
