Email not sent during registration

  I have installed WP 2.3.1

  Options are set to have users register.
  When a user completes the register screen he is told to verify the email.
  The email is never sent.

  I suspect a problem with wp_mail()

  To prove that php mail is working I wrote a test php mail routine. It sends emails.
  Where do I go from here?
