Hello there Colin,
Could you please send me the MX record (including priorities) as supplied by your email provider?
An MX record should include priority settings.
I have set a new MX record for mail.albertastreetnews.org for mail to go to 162.213.158.6
It doesn’t work. What you’ve set — 162.213.158.6 — is not an MX record. It isn’t in the right format. This might be an A record, but not a Mail Exchange setting.
An MX record is comprised of the following pieces of information:
- Your domain (or subdomain)
- Your provider’s domain
- Priority
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

So I should change this to a A record then?
I am handling this mail through an account setup at site5 and if the email arrives at 162.213.158.6 the mail server should handle it from there, Yes?
This is the MX settings from the control panel
Manage MX Records
Destination Host albertastreetnews.org.
Priority 10Thanks for you help with this

Hey Colin,
Let’s use the MX records from your control panel first. I see that you already made that adjustment. Let’s give the change some propagation time, and then let me know if the email is working for you.
Thanks so much!

Hi Robyn,
I have had that MX record in there for nigh on 5 hours now so I’m thinking whatever is gonna happen would have happened…
Still thinking “A” record ;-)

Hello, on the advice of Site5 last night I added a MX record which pointed to albertastreetnews.org
So I have a A record pointing to my Site 5 ip address and a MX record pointing to albertastreetnews.org
The email still does not flow.
The tech at Site5 pointed me to this fantastic resource

I am not getting any change from report on
http://intodns.com/albertastreetnews.org
Am I to presume that you cannot set a MX record?

Hey Colin!
Am I to presume that you cannot set a MX record?
We can edit your DNS to include your MX record(s) here at WordPress.com. I’m more than happy to do that for you, to iron our your trouble.
We do need the correct MX record from your email host. Reviewing your last missives, I don’t see a complete MX record, including priority, from your host. Who is your email host? Is it albertastreetnews.org? If so, they should be able to provide it for you.
I took a look at the link you provided (http://intodns.com/albertastreetnews.org), and saw this error message:
Oh well, I did not detect any MX records so you probably don’t have any and if you know you should have then they may be missing at your nameservers!
Can you confirm for me that your MX record and your A record were given to your by your email host? If I don’t have those confirmed, I cannot know if things are set up properly on our end.
Please let me know if your email worked properly before your attempted to change your settings at WordPress.com.
Thanks much, Colin.

Hi Robyn,
We never have had email.
We are trying to set it up to leave you hosting the website but for us to use a remote email host Site5.
These are the settings the Site5 technician set in place, you can use 10 as the priority as it won’t matter as there are no other mail servers looking to receive our mail.

Colin,
Here is exactly what I need in order to fix your issue:
I need you to contact Site5 and ask specifically for the full DNS records needed to set up your email at WordPress.com. Then, copy and paste the entirety of what Site5 tells you.
You and I have been going back and forth a bit, and our details have gotten a bit diluted. I still don’t see a full set of Site5-confirmed records. Once I get those, I can get you setup.
Also, just an FYI, it can take 72-hours for adjustments to DNS to propagate internet-wide. Five hours isn’t quite enough time to test a new configuration.
Thank you!

Hi Robyn,
I realized that this wasn’t going to work for us in the long-term and so I have moved the website off wordpress.com and so we have both website and email with the same company.
Now, all is well
Thanks for your efforts
