  Is it not possible for people to sign up with their email on my wordpress blog without making a wordpress user, and without me paying for the hole package?

  Hi, do you want people to contribute to your blog, or do you want them to follow your blog?

  You can use the email subscription option to let people follow your blog.

  Then a wordpress account is not required, just an email address.
